So I decided to go the 18x5.5 with a metzler 180 on my 2002 Deuce route after everything I've read on this and other forums. I bought some Fat Spokes from Demon Cycles that were advertised as being from Mammoth. I've tried every which way from Sunday to put my rear wheel on but there is no way it will fit from what I can tell. The wheel is kicked way over to the brake side with about 1/8" of space between the stock pulley and the swing arm (with the stock pulley side spacer installed). So what I'm wondering is this: for those of you that have done this, how wide is your hub from outside to outside? I measured the new wheel hub to be an inch wider that stock. Which makes sense to me since the wheel is an inch wider. Any insight or help you guys can provide would be greatly appreciated. And to add insult to injury, the front wheel is leaking air from the spokes.. This has been a PITA!
Thanks for all the replies fellas.. I appreciate it.. FYI all 18x5.5 wheels are not created equal. Be careful when you're ordering to make damn sure the hub is no wider than 7.1" if you are trying to use the stock (99-06) belt and pulley.
I ordered my wheels from demonscycle.com and specifically asked twice if it would fit my bike. I was told yes and I ordered them. Well, the rear doesn't fit (not even close) and now they refuse to take them back. Don't order anything from these guys. They send you crap that they say will work and then won't take it back when it doesn't
You didn't post your query in the best place. Take a look at the number of hits and you will see they are very low in here. Call in the Softail forum and try again. They are so busy with their wide tyre jobs they don't all in here!
You may want to verify but pretty sure those are actually just DNA wheels if they came from Demon.
You are right not all 18x5.5 are the same the hub size is just as important as the bearing size, as you have found out. If the hub is not oem size be prepared to get busy spacing.
Other note, you should really check on a vendors reputation before ordering, demon is well pretty hit or miss from what I have heard. I seen some great deals but after reading way too many iffy reviews I just passed and would rather skip the headaches.
got a set of 18's for my 06 sporty, 3.5 F 4.25 R from american wire wheel, great quality and fitment, just told them i wanted stock sporty hub demensions
