I'm looking to replace my tires on my road king this winter.I'm gonna go with wide white walls, either metzeler me880 or the Avon cobras.I would like a long lasting tire that is good for wet weather.some roads near me are like ice after a rain.which one of the two is better.thanks for any info.
I changed from the stock Dunlops to Avons and was impressed on how much better the bike handled with the Avons. Last change I went with ME888s. They are even better than the Avons. I feel like I'm stuck to the road.
I've been using Avons on my Harleys since the 1970s and always go back to them. As for your ambition, you can't have good wet weather grip and also get high mileage! With Avons you will get excellent grip and handling, in all conditions, plus decent mileage. In addition you will also enjoy a better and more comfortable ride, as they are more compliant than stock tyres.
If you buy either brand, check their website, as non-stock tyres often use different pressures from stock tyres. Avon for example are usually a little higher than in your owners manual.
I'd go with the Avon Cobras. Do they come in WWW? I just experienced a tread separation on a ME880 on the rear of my '08 SE Ultra with less than 5k miles on it. Don't know if the new ME888's are better, though.

Maybe your tire was defective from the beginning...I got over 22,000 miles on mine with no problems.
Between the two you mentioned, Avon without a second thought. I have also experienced the tread separation on Metzeler tires on more than one occasion on my bike and customers bikes...That being said, you will not get great mileage out of them. The trade-off for having such a great feeling and handling and grip is wear...
I run avons on my rg.love them.bought metz a couple times the rears weren't true size they ran small for some reason.a180 on my se.look like a 150.took it off and sold it.
