Default S&S engines

S&amp\\;S engines

Well got to do something, re-build or S&amp\\;S shovel complete engine, know whats involved in the re-build this well be the third top end, never the bottom end done just crossing the fingers.

I was wondering anybody here have or know someone with a complete shovel from S&amp\\;S ?

Looking at the 93 shovel the low compression ratio 8:5:1 not the 10â€1

Thanks,

cj

Well I guess I will find out on my own, how complete S&S engines are : - )

S&S, 93 ci shovel engine came today after trying to order it the way I wanted, it took almost 4 weeks just to get them to paint the engine black, nobody would give us a answer I heard S&S is a big time corporation now and just like any large corp. nobody is going to make a decision with out a CYA sign-off, here was the answer after I hear it was brought up at weekly staff meetings (no it wasn’t the only subject at those meetings) yes we can powder coat the heads and body cases for a extra $300. Well ok, we could have save a lot of time in the beginning just say that ? my dealer just laugh, he said they have it make it up since they make no painted heads, so the heads and cases were first coated then assembled, to me I am glad I went for it, I am use to my FXS low rider with a black engine, I think hd did a great job on that engine, I guess I am not a big fan of silver heads and I know about the slight heat build-up with powder coating, but if S&S can live with the two warranty so can I.

The transmission comes in this Friday I hope, but have to wait for the started and rotor / stator, primary chain etc.

So I guess I will review S&S engines when it gets all together and the long break in time.

Keep the forum updated on the project status. I am considering buying my first shove right now and the bike I am looking at is extremely rough. I may look at an upgrade like this for a project if I do make the jump.

I think you will be very happy with the S&S. I know I am.

Some "purists" claim that my bike is "no longer a Harley" or some such other crap. My bike is mine and will be my Grandson's one day, so it really does not matter what "they" say. Just be prepared to hear a lot of that.

In my case, my motor was shot, I started to rebuild the whole thing from the ground up and had started to assemble all the parts to do the S&S 93 kit. I discovered a crack in my lower case. Then I found that the numbers did not match, anyway. So... I went the easy way out. I bought a complete 93" and sold all the parts on eBay. In the end I actually just about broke even with the resale of the new, unused parts. I sold all the individual OEM parts that were salvageable, as well.

I have put 20k on the new motor and I cannot be happier. You still have the Shovel sound and feel with the reliability of an Evo. The rest of the bike is still AMF technology (even tho it is NOT an AMF) so I still have leaks from the primary, electrical problems, substandard brakesetc. but I am working to upgrade all that too.

I was very apprehensive to swap in a new motor, but in the end it was the best thing I could have done.

Just my nickel's worth of free advice...

Just be careful how you word the change on the title.
If you aren't they may re-classify it to a custom.

No problem I like getting info and giving it back, good luck in the hunt, ever heard of the phase: "What goes around, comes around" ? well I was told by a few dealers and read about how the customs been storming the last 6 or 7 years, well it top out, theres nothing can be done that hasn’t already been done, was how it was put to me, people are starting to build shovels once again in new /old frames, Baker Drivetrains didn’t put the money into R&Ding their new 6 speed transmission 6 into 4 they call it, it fits shovel frames to 1984, it’s a 6 speed with true overdrive .86 to 1 instead for example hd 6 speed 1 to 1 ratio.
Baker tranny will drop your rpm by 500 rpm’s at 70 mph, are they are selling like crazy only been out since the beginning of last year ! IMO I think people are really thinking of new bikes as a hassle, they run lean and hot, put on a new set of pipes and air cleaner you got to do a mapping, so a mini backlash so to speak, small but starting to build, ok will keep you posted.

I check that to be sure a few months back, PA titles the bike by the frame that is where the serial or VIN number that they go by, the engine number doesn’t match, I am getting a build papers from S&S for the engine, I want to see if I can add that engine number on my records in Harrisburg DOT, in case (god forbid) it gets stolen if they ever run the engine number my name will pop up.
That’s the plan anyway !

Thick skin Chief : - ) away I am a life member of HOG I have there $20 a year towing option for the "just in cases" never used it yet, my number begins with 11 thousand, what I suppose to drop my paid for life membership ? no-way, my title states harley and that’s what it is : - )

[left][color=#0000cc]Great you made your money back, many don’t, you reminded me of my small problem with a case (so to speak) I dealer friend told me in ’02 hay want to add something to your bike most likely the best thing you can for performance ? what ?, a new clutch ? what make ? Rivera engineering pro clutch, how much ? $575, what ! come on man $600 for a clutch, he said $535, still a lot, well I brought it, at my buddys garage on the jack taking the inter primary off, hay well as long as it’s off I am chroming it, I sent it out, well my independent dealer to Browns chroming, it came back in two weeks (busy right before Daytona) well it comes back no chrome ? with a marker circle on the backside over a small hairline crack ! I mess it so did the dealer, damn two choices get it welded or a new one, hay the bank is already open so I got a CAL Products inter-primary they said 3 lbs heavier than stock with all this reinforcement around the tranny input shaft, I still have the pictures of both, looks like a ¼" thick, looks better chromed : ) so I know what can happen with cracks, but man in the cases, that a way bigger prob

I checked on the "may re-classify it to a custom. " issue before I did it. In Florida the title is all based on the VIN. No issues there.

I have to say about the HOG membership... That is where I caught the most grief! Yuppies that have never even changed their own oil telling me that I don't have a real Harley anymore... The president of my Chapter is so eaten up with the Harley Image crap he refused a set of Kuryakin (spell check) handgrips that he won as a door prize because they were not Genuine... He was applauded like he just gave up a kidney! The redrew and when the other guy kept them, he was booed. Then, that wuss said, I am gonna put them on my wife's Shadow.... My membership ran out and will not be renewed.

Oh and by the way.... My bike was originally a FLTC Tour Glide. The Precourser to the Road Glide. Fixed Frame mounted fairing etc. So, ease up on the ruber mount will ya, you are give a guy a complex....

HOG membership has never caused me any grief, since I became a member way back, I never joined a local chapter came close once, but never join one, I just get the pin / patch and country map showing where all dealers are.

Complex ? : - ) not my intention to do that, I am saying, I don’t like rubber mounted engines for myself, I like the feeling of the motor w/o the rubber mounts and I like to see/feel the whole bike vibrate at idle, than just see an engine shake & roll sitting in the frame : - )

I am glad you liked the S&S engine !

“dynratâ€

The Baker 6 into 4 tranny came yesterday, I am filling out the warranty info, hay 5 years or 50,000 you bet I am filling it out : - ) Baker advises using 20-24 oz of one of the following: Red Line 75w250, Spectro 75x140SPL, Bel Ray 80w90, Torco 85w140 and AMSOIL 75w90 most likely using the last one, this 6 into 4 is only for shovelhead frames to ’84 if the serial number are any indication of how many they made of this model, mine is right in the middle of 300 not bad for coming out last year at this time, hopefully this overhaul is going too move faster now.
