What is the top gear ratio of the 6n4? I have a factory 5 speed in mine. One of the first 5 speeds they produced. I am 1:1 in 5th. A true over drive, like .86:1 would be better for highway rides, but I am perfectly content with what I have. Anyway... I would not advise you to use it, but I use 90w gear oil in mine.
If only I could just have a better throw out bearing system with having to replace the whole tranny........
Sorry for the delay, I have been in the field... Sleeping on a cot is not as much fun when you are 41 as when I was 21... but I digress...

The last time I slept on the ground in the month of feb was approx 10 years ago, a bunch of us from work went snow/ice camping in tents, hiking, messing around with a little ice climbing the 21 water falls was pretty neet, mini-crampons a must, but did it again in 2007, maybe, but I am really off base here, hay is this work or play in the field ?

Man tough time finding the gear ratio but there is a list below I found but it is not clear if that is my 1 through 4 th gear in the 6 speed, what is clear is that my 5th is 1:1 and the 6th is .86, my old 4 speed was 1:1, I am glad I made myself put out the extra 700 for the overdrive, hay did you know itâs Neutral is all the way down ? and 6 up ! thatâs different. Below is the only thing I found on Baker site about ratios.
Baker's 6-into-4 transmission is a direct replacement for the 1970-E84 4-speed, available with or without the time-honored 1936-84 style kicker. In a 4-speed, 4th gear is 1:1. Baker's Shovelhead 6-speed overdrive has a 1:1 5th gear and a .86 6th; good for a 500 RPM reduction in cruising RPM on the highway.
GEAR RATIOS
R-Ratio
1st 2.75
2nd 2.05
3rd 1.55
4th 1.18
5th 1.1
6th .86

I like anybody opinion how else do we learn ?

I am in Iraq. I am on a counter IED task force that is embedded with the Army. Just a few months left, cannot wait to get home and put a few thousand miles on the scoot. My wife and I have a big trip planned this fall. Going the entire length of the Blue Ridge Parkway in October. Hang out with friends in VA for a few days and head back...
Anyway........... back on topic..........
The .86 is going to be very nice on the Open road. (I notice now that you gave the ratio in one of the first threads... sorry, I missed that...) We put a Baker RSD 6speed in a buds custom, and he tells me that if he were to do it again, he would not have spent the extra money. BUT, that is because he has a super raked out, ultra long ridgid chopper. He only goes on the highway once in a blue moon. In the city, he never gets it up to speed enough to get it out of 5th. I stumbled into an old (late 80's) FX frame that I intend to build into a bobber/barhopper/street fighter. I am going to use a 5speed because I have no intention of really ever going on the highway with it.
I sure wish it were "play". I love rock climbing and have spent many a night in a tent for relaxation. Unfortunately that is not the case here.

Damn, I didnât have any idea ! I shouldnât have use that term âPlayâ, there is no way in hell that anybody serving in Iraq is playing ! real sorry about that ! I just didnât know.

I guess you canât wait, the Blue Ridge and in âOctoberâ ! I wish you good weather and good times.

[size=3][font="times new roman"]âultra long ridgid chopperâ [color=#0000cc]Ouch ! fantastic to look at, IMO a PIA to ride : - ) one couldnât tell me that 25 years
I own a house in Western NC, so I ride the BRP as often as I can. The fall trip will be the first time to do the full length in one push. I also hope that the weather cooperates. I am really ready to see some colors besides Tan and Olive Drab....
My bud with the rigid complains all the time about the ride. Then some little hottie (half his age) Ooooh's and Aaaaah's and begs for a ride.... That normally stops the complaining for a few weeks. *I* will never own a rigid.
I have not given the 5 speed too much thought actually. I will stumble on one eventually if I even ever get around to building it. I actually got an e-mail yesterday asking if I would part with it. The guy that wants it is doing a lot of stuff for me while I am gone, so I may let it go. I don't *need* another vehicle right now anyway... two pickups, wife's SUV, bike, and '66 'stang that is partway into a frame off rebuild.
Thanx for the well wishes, and again, no offense taken.

Good luck, Chief.
No offense taken, so no apoligy necessary. Actually, after re-reading my post, I should have used a smiley to tone it down a bit, it came across a bit strong.

No, I didnât think you were pissed off, or read anything in your tone, I just felt like an idiot, for not realizing e-mail can be from anywhere !

Between the two, that is some real contrast ! : - )))

hmmm, âhottie, half his ageâ ?? I wonder how much I can get for my ride ? : - )))

[font="times new roman"][color=#0000cc][size=3]I know what you mean the toys can really pile up ! hay donât mention â66 stang, I go right into thinking about my â66 GTO tri-power, 360 hp, 4-speed close ratio, 390 rear !!!! I ran what they called back then âPure Stockâ BP/S, no slicks or headers andfor the guys who cheated a little : - ) but not like a car sponsor by some car dealer when anything goes in A/S and B/S, ran all day doing 13.8âs, / 105 mph, see how I get started
Well of course there were going to be little hold ups, there are in very re-built or up-date, thatâs nothing new for the people on this end of the forum : - )
And it didnât help being sick for the last week or so, slowing the pace a bit, first time is 15 years !
Anyway the motor and baker are in the frame, the problem started when hooking up the new starter, I decided that since this is my original hd starter (Hitachi style) I wasnât going to take a chance with the old one (Murphyâs law) crapping out in a month of getting this all put back ! So I ordered a new âAll *****â starter (I like the name: ) based on the Hitachi style, a little more power than stock starter 1.4Kw rating, I donât need no super starter (they have them up to 1.7Kw) to turn a low compression 93 ci motor over, sure enough with the Baker 6 into 4 tranny and the starter, the hot bolt rams into the bottom of the battery tray, in the olds days, it might have been this, move and re-weld in place the battery box, get the file or cut off what we donât need of that hot lug (only half kidding: )
So a call to All ***** just might work, measure where the hot lug can rotate away from the battery tray, mark the starter housing, and All ***** will put extra holes in a billet mounting piece between the primary and starter, hay is this sweet fix or what !
Just a bit of relieving on the inside of the primary where the input shaft of the tranny enters, (for the nut) if this is the only two problems I run into, Ill be happy !

The Best of Harley-Davidson for Lifelong Riders
I replaced my starter with a ***** (summer '05). I love it. That was just before I blew up the motor and did the S&S swap.
Of course, breaking off the stud, flush with the primary when I was puilling the old one added to the fun, but that was really not that big adeal. Just another day in the life of a shovel.
When I bought it, I spent many hours scraping overspray off of things. When I rebuild my top-end (hopefully not any time soon...) I am gonna have to have mine powdercoated because I really like that look.
