S&S engines
Thanx for the update... I was wondering how things were going.
I replaced my starter with a ***** (summer '05). I love it. That was just before I blew up the motor and did the S&S swap.
Of course, breaking off the stud, flush with the primary when I was puilling the old one added to the fun, but that was really not that big adeal. Just another day in the life of a shovel.

Man I am glad to hear about that, too tell you the truth I never heard of All ***** starters, I kept asking people at the independent dealer I go too, they make good starters ? really ? : - ) I guess it was the name : - ) , anyway I hear their made in Canada and some assy down here, good materials and most likely better than I have !

Ouch ! but I knowing exactly what you are talking about : - )

“I just looked at that pic.... I realllllly like the blacked out look. My original motor was all black like that. Painted with wrinkle high temp BBQ grill paint from a rattle-can. The guy that did it didn't take it outta the frame or even tape anything off.”
Ii’s amazing how some people do things ? a little masking tape goes so far ! and what would it have taken an hour of two longer ????
“When I bought it, I spent many hours scraping overspray off of things. When I rebuild my top-end (hopefully not any time soon...) I am gonna have to have mine powdercoated because I really like that look. “
I see you put the PIA time into it, that’s good very good, it’just not all common anymore, well Chief that is the look, powder coated and what a time I had to get that done from S&S, I give all the credit to my independent dealer shop, I knew this guy for all 20 years, he knew I wanted an all black engine, since my low rider engine was all black, I am use to that it kind of grew on me the past 20 some years : - )
[font="times new roman"][color=#0000cc][size=3]So he kept telling one rep at S&S this customer wants a all black 93 ci engine, we don’t paint the 93 ci engine head, cases, I have to get back to
Really can’t do much since the starter isn’t back getting that mod I need done so I was on Baker web site messing around with their RPM Calc, it seems like it’s set up for belt pulley teeth, example final sprocket 61, 65 and 70, are presets well I put in 51 teeth for a chain sprocket, clutch sprocket has 37 preset ok that is what most shovels are, rear tire dia 16, Front sprocket (trans) 24, but their lowest is 29 (it’s for belt pulley) Motor comp. sprocket, 24 they have a preset for that 24, Last gear choices, Stock, 1, OD6 .86 (which I have) OD6 .80, and DD6 1, you just pick on one of them, Speed you enter the speed 65, 70, 75 80 anything you want, of course the answer is in RPM
This is where I think something is wrong, once everything is in I switch MPH, I have 65 MPH, 47 tooth rear sprocket, and I get 3545 RPM, I keep everything the same but I change the Last gear from .86 to a stock 1, 3957 RPM shows up ? I don’t do almost 4000 RPM at 65 MPH it’s something like 3500 RPM, so either my tach is screwed-up or this calculator ?
I happen to mention this to my dealer, he said he was using the calc and it was nuts on with a sportster he was checking out, different final sprocket teeth.
I can’t do anything about it except see myself when it’s back on the road !

Engine fit update in ’81 Shovelhead frame
S&S new shovelhead rocker boxes are great looking, a little bit bigger, two piece, the bad thing about them or I should say the rear rocker box, no-way are you going to pull that rocker box off the head without pulling the engine, it’s a very tight fit just clears the top frame, I am not exactly looking forward too it, but after all it is a new engine I should have a little time before that has to happen.
I will post a better picture of the clearance, it's tight but it went in with no problem.

In the rear rocker you can see the seam of the two piece rocker box

At last the rear 51 tooth sprocket came in, over a week and with this latest cold blast, it looks good next week and some of this weekend, with luck the bike should be finished next weekend ! then the first 50 miles and dump the oil !
500 then dump it once more. Will update with first impressions next, at least up to 2500 RPM's : - )

also today S&S sent me a Shovelhead shop manual, now thats two I have : - )
Starter update:
Got the starter back from All ***** their place is approx 25 NW of me, but it’s nice I went through my local independent dealer same price maybe $10 more than on the net, but no shipping but tax ! ran approx. $245, but the dealer got them to drill some more holes in the face that mounts up to the primary, now I can get that hot lug out of the bottom of the battery tray, I just had to pay for shipping of the unit, instead of screwing with the battery tray or grinding away a “little” of the Baker tranny, yeah I’ll pay shipping. Dealer wanted them to drill bolt holes all around the top, it came back with just 4 extra drill holes, dealer was concerned, tell you so was I, will it work,? it did ! All ***** must know about this problem and I guess they didn’t want to make it look like swiss cheese : - )
The pics below the starter length, the top (spindle) shows the 4 extra mounting holes, as you can see the two on each side at 3 and 9 o’clock are the extra ones, the three at 1 and 7 o’clock are the standard ones, it worked perfect ! the last pic shows the starter in, notice how small the starter is in dia and length, see the stock mounting bracket, I am trying to add this to the battery tray for a little more support, no way is it going to mount up to that starter, this starter is rated at 1.4Kw the smallest they make, my stock starter is rated at .8Kw, this All ***** starter will fit 1988 and earlier.
Exhaust, is the next problem my double wall FURBAR front pipe interferes with the front engine mounted oil filter, (EVO style)not even a little hammering will clear this !

If ABS knows of the issue, why do they not offer it with the alternate hole patteren? hmmmmmmmmmmm

Well only guessing since this starter (model) is for Big Twins up to 1988, maybe it had to do with my non stock tranny, but that shouldn’t have made a difference, had no clearance problems ? it is a small starter, shorter in length and in dia. It’s rating as I said is 1.4Kw, my stock HD is .8Kw, I know, it doesn’t make sense to me, the shop state they have a very good reputation, very few come backs ? Maybe I’ll shoot them an e-mail and ask !
But I have bigger problems with the exhaust the front pipe doesn’t come close to fit, yes they are double wall so the out side dia is a little over 2.25”m but what I need is a front pipe that comes out fron the front exhaust port a few inches at a soft 90 deg then back and down, that will fit, but mine comes right out and down, evo oil filter housing is right in the way ! we have a call into S&S if they have any ideas or some brands of exhaust, lest hope or it going to be a 6” goose neck welded to my cut off front pipe !!! : - ) at this point I want it on the road, you know what I mean : - ) take a look at post #1 it shows my ride, see the front pipe, it's fat and comes straight down.
“Silly Yuppie, Trailers are for Boats!”
Chief, I got that sticker on my half helmet !!!!
Take care of yourself !

Oh, I had one that said "10K and 10 miles doesn't make you a biker!" on an old helmet. I loaned it to a bud that was riding to Texas, got to Pensacola and realized he left his lid in Jax. Could not get outta FL without one... Got hit by a drunk outside of New Orleans. Helmet didn't make it, but my bud was OK. He offered to buy me a new one, but I wouldn't let him... Replacing it with a carbon fiber one when I get back.
