S&S engines
I sure hope the Cycle Shack pipes work for you. I didn't have any of these issues. Then again, I did not move my filter to the front either. My filter is aft of the tranny, sounds like the FX set up. The FX and the FLT had many similarities, actually, so that makes sense to me.
“I sure hope the Cycle Shack pipes work for you.”
They sure did all most perfectly, as you know it was all about keeping the EVO style oil filter mounted up front, but the guys at my independent dealer really came through, while looking in they catalogs someone remember how FL / FLH front pipes looked, we look them up in a Cycle Shack cat. It looks like it would work, it did, the front pipe fits perfect ! but the rear pipe ! hit’s a bit on the Baker 6 speed ! doesn’t it always work that way : - ) so came up with an idea, if I can add 2” of extra pipe into the top part of the rear pipe just down from where it hooks up in the head it would clear nice, well since I couldn’t really glue models kit together when a kid, I am not going to do this, but the dealer knows somebody who can, then just cover the weld spot with a heat shield, that is where I am at today.
Remember using this set of exhaust is only because I am taking advantage of the EVO style oil filter, on this S&S 93 ci engine, if I added the rear hd oil filter mounted to the transmission plate like on ’82 and up FX or just kept my “in the oil tank oil filter drop in cartridge” (no freakin way) this would not be a problem at all. You will see by the picture below how the front pipe leaves the exhaust port not by coming down to the right side of the timing cover or “nose cone”, but leaves out the front, inside of the right frame down tube, then down and along the right side, besides coming no way near the oil filter mount, it actually opens up the look of the engine, I think it works out better.

Since I order this S&S 93 shovelhead complete engine back in late January, I found out two things from S&S, yes it was their first “all black” powder coated engine they ever did, seems like everyone I talk to (3 at S&S) everybody remembers that engine being made and since then, one more was ordered. “NOW ISN”T THAT SPECIAL” as the saying goes from Saturday night live : - )))
Next ? well with luck on this guys time schedule, who is going to weld the pipe up, maybe this coming weekend or worst the following week ! either way, looks to be in the wind, for “engine break-in”, gee, up to the max 2500 RPM, (for 8 hrs or so) I don’t know, how I will handle it !!! : - )
Take care be safe,Chief, in no time at all, you will be riding !

Unfortunately I just found out that I have been extended. Only a Month, but it still sucks! Looks like the first of May for me now... [:@] As long as I get home for my son's HS graduation (24 May) I will be ok withit, if not, I am gonna choke some damn body!
cj That looks Awesome! You have a little different ignition cover on yours, I noticed. Mine has a matte finish. Doesn't matter tho, I am gonna take it off when I get the custom one done. I have not decided on my Chief's anchor or my Aircrew Wings. I have already talked to BilletCAT about it, but havenot put everything in motion yet. Dress up stuff comes afterthe new 'bars and wire harness.

Chief thanks man it’s growing on me too, same paint but all new innards only a rider would understand : - ) yeah, the timing cover is S&S new billet design fit’s ’72 to ’93 and ’93 to ’99 it ani’t cheap $450, glad it came with the engine !

What everone you chose, will be the right one, and your so right “Dress up stuff comes after” !!!

Not even close to “World Famous” dude : - ) but the 3 different people I did talk too remember it, after all S&S never believe in fully painting their engines, I was such a PIA about it, I see it as they just give in : - ) and I could bet that guy after me getting it all black he is going to pay big time for it, I know S&S had a painful learning experience they only charge me $300 extra, I know from the lead I talked to, said they had too really clean off the mating surfaces of all the parts from the cases to the heads, that’s all hand work.
[font="times new roman"][color=#0000cc][size=3]I was looking at the 80 or 93 ci a few years back, I remember list being around high 4,000 or just into 5,000 with all the new stuff they put into it, like the new electronic single fire ignition, new style billet rocker covers, putting in the roller rockers (93 ci only) I think in J&P cat they go close to 400 ! the new billet gear cover (timing case with us) EVO cam and basically everything from the cam (except the roller rockers ) to the top, the whole valve train is EVO, the one thing I did notice when the engine was still in the box, there was no “oil tube” crossover from rocker box to rocker box, I can’t wait to see the oil pressure, so all the impro

Brother it is gonna blow your mind! I was used to it barely reading on my gauge at idle.... now it hovers around 22......... no, that was not a typo... 22psig w0w
Anyway, it is bedtime for me (midnight 30)... I am taking the morning off and sleeping in. If you can call 7am Sleeping In... but I am normally up at 4, so I guess it conts.
No, this had more to do with the surge than anything else. I am ok with it, just bummed becauseI gotta wait a bit longer.

Yeah I understand that, after I replied, I remember the date was April 15 the military needs it by, but I still don’t leave them off the hook !

Ok, exhaust rear pipe is back from the welder looks good for having 2” piece added inserted, rain today some tomorrow, so Saturday is start up day.
Oh, yeah, this will burr some people, I am breaking the new motor in with synthetic oil, I been round and round with this, I know how to seat the rings in the first few miles using the Grant Piston Ring method, thesame for decades, get on a long straight road, it’s going to be new with the 6 speed, so Igot to find the gear that will not lug it, but not take off like a rocket either, Grant wants a light load on the engine, (not lugging it)for explaining, say 3 gear doing approx. 25 mph twist the grip full then take it up to 50-55mph, twist-off the grip, let the engine brake on it’s own or coast down, come down to 25 mph,(this is where the rings getseated into the piston walls) twist again up to 50-55 repeat, do this for 10 times, the rings are seated, but the rest of the break-in must be done by mileage, I learn something new, in the first 50 miles (of course no super-slab riding) the 50 I will do is state roads a few small towns it’s 25 miles up so at approx half that I will let the engine cool down, or the way back same thing at mid point or stop more times if it's really running hot ! oil temp and IR heat readings off the heads, cyl etc. I will be taking.
I learned the engine will have hot spots it’s better to air-cool it down mid way, almost all the way down, I knew the first 50 miles will be the hottest this engine most likely will ever see (I hope : ) so what I picked up at least 3 places on info about break-in,was the stopping is real important, to letthe enginecome back in balance, for a lack of better wording.
I was having real doubts about breaking this in with synthetic oil, it’s like Ford vs Chevy the Dino oil vs synthetic oil break-in, I was leaning to just running Dino oil in it for the first 50 miles mostly for the rings seat, I called S&S, I asked them hay “you really want me to break-in this new engine with synthetic oil ?”
He come back to me with “did you get the 4 qts of Mobile V Twin synthetic with your engine ? “ yes I told him, “why wouldn’t you use it for break-in then” “Didn’t you get our 2 year, un-limited mileage warranty” yes, “You don’t think S&S didn’t test this product first, on many new engines break-ins”
That was the answer that was missing, they did test this synthetic with break-ins, that is all I needed, Mobile V Twin 20-50 for the first 50 miles, dump it and the filter (I will cut the filter open too see the shavings and save the oil) then fill it up with AMSOIL synthetic and a new filter.
And I couldn’t have ordered better weather for this coming Saturday, high of 44 degs, couldn’t be better for engine break-in !!!
I’ll be back with the break-in results, hopefully with no exhaust smoke or knocks ! : - )))))

I have an update on my bike. Posted it here. https://www.hdforums.com/m_1470687/tm.htm
The most important part is I finally got a date. Fly outta here 21ish and depart Kuwait 26th. My extention ended up being only 10 days. Far cry better than a month.
I am looking forward to reading the update Sunday.
Oh, on the oil issue.... I agree 100%, it is the Ford vs. Chevy fight.......
“ChiefGator “
“I sure hope the weather hold for you. I am as excited about it as you are I think. Following your build is one of the things I look forward to each day”
Hay thanks, that is becauseyou "have one" and you know how it runs, I can't wait to find out, well after the 50 mile first run : - ) It looks like it will hold 44 high, I wanted to do it after I seen the zero response I received from my first post on this subject , I wanted some input from anyone who knows about or runs a S&S Shovelhead, maybe I could learn anything new or some tips, so I just kept it going, and by seeing how many views it received, maybe if someone needs some of the same info, maybeit could help !

Whoa !! what the hell ! why have you been hiding it ? how come you didn’t share her with me before Chief ? : - )
Damn, that is onesweet ride, Chief that is better than most new on the road today, the updates to the front end plus the wiring, smart mods too do, I won’t tell you good luck, you already have it ! in spades !

Damn that good news !!!! I can’t believe it ! to be honest I thought you might be staying even longer !! damn I am glad it turned out to be shorter for you ! when you first said they extended your stay, I thought here we go !!! hay when you get HOME ! when the wife un-ties herself from around you, and all the partying plays out, get on-line and tell me how was it getting back on that great looking shovel and riding !!!! and don't do any day dreaming on the road !!! : - ))) you got a lot of catching up to do !!
“ Oh, on the oil issue.... I agree 100%, it is the Ford vs. Chevy fight.......”
No question about it Chief, it was real touch and go, hay I am a believer in synthetic oil but with breaking it in with synthetic I was on the edge, use it or Dino oil, it was the last thing to put on/in was the oil ! once the oil lines were back on and the stock oil cooler, I have to make a move, after that phone call to S&S, that is what sold me !
Good luck and be safe Chief, and real local happy days are in sight !!!!

This was the very first thread that I posted to when I joined the forum. If not the first, One of the first.
I know it may sound strange, but when I said I followthis thread every day, I meant it. It isone of the little "escapes" that I can have. The movie "Happy Gilmore" made light of it, but when you are in a stressful environment, you have to find your "Happy Place" once in a while to stay sane.Thinking of your build and imagining how it is going and what I would be doing if I were building it was part of that. The same with the mods I am doing to mine.
I am on the downhill slide now... this is actually the most dangerous time for me. Many guys let their guard down too soon. I have three more missions "outside the wire" I think. Maybe four. As soon as the wheels go in the well, and I am in the climb outta Kuwait, then I will be able to relax.
Anyway, sorry to hijack the thread with rambling there... had a rough day. Lost three friends last nighton a mission that I should have been on, but had a confiction in the schedule so I did not go. Really need a happy place right now.
Chief
Yes, I thought I was going to be extended quite a while. When the smoke cleared and it turned out to be 10 days........ after a year, ten days is nothing...

Your right on the whole 10 days is nothing, It’s great your getting out you did your share, I just wish everybody could come home, but in reality I know that isn’t for awhile.

Without the slightest real experience of being there, and the stress of it, day in, day out, I can imagine (without truly knowing) what you men and women are going through.
