Default It's all about the miles !

After filing more of the clutch plates, finding neutral is much easier I know I didn’t take enough off in the first place, and I put a set of these plates in before! So with other things I had to do today I only put on 110 miles, Ifilled up with Shell without any corn crap in it, that’s a 35 mile run in it’s self, tomorrow up toaround thesame place, the bike is running better and better still haven’t gotten into it yet, want to see how 82 HP feels, the pumping is unbelievable like I said before it’s not all exhaust even if these pipes are a bit louder, it’s all in the engine pounding : - )

I do get looks from Twin Cam riders at traffic lights, but soon, mayberespect !, anyway the tranny is getting better I was all wrap-up into the engine at first, (paying attention to the first 50 miles) I am so glad I put out the extra bucks, I started out just getting the engine, but doing 2500 RPMs at70 MPH is something I only dreamed about, now it’s real, the oil temp was up, well it was 80 today that helped, it’s at last running at 180 degs, back to normal really hot days I ran just up to 200 degs with the old engine.

Well no big surprises I guess that’s good, so all it is now is about the miles ! I need at least 1,000 beforeJune 5th, I work just inside Philly, no way I go to work on my ride, that was ok years ago, but now with the traffic (standing in) isn’t for my motor, so that leaves the weekends, not counting for reallybad weather, lets face it all the things we wait for the weekend to do, is still there, but they will have to wait ! so it’s rain or shine getting these miles on !

later, ride safe !

Default RE: It's all about the miles !

Took off at 8:00AM headed to the next county for gas without corn syrup ! I know the time will come I have to use this crap, but not breaking in this engine now, yesterday (Sat. I put on 110 miles) today I did 215 miles, not to bad with things to do, I got a surprise this morning going for breakfast the place is 35 miles out (worth the trip 2 miles from it the bike sputters ? WTH, I hit reserve ? I got a 102 miles on the tank ? doing the ruff math a 3.5 Gal tank with a half gal in reserve so 3 into 102 leaves 34 miles to the gal ! not good.

After eating I went to a gas station up the road, this county has ethanol, I got half gal, the guy thought I was nuts or broke : - ) I made it to the Shell station in a different county with what I had in the tank, filled up and on the way, found my way in the Pocono Mountains, lots of F-up NY drivers, the bikers are ok, it’s the cage drivers, they think they are in NY !

Filled it up again (out of the corn syrup countries) this time I didn’t go on reserve and a little more accurate I am getting 39 MPH I think this sucks, yeah I know it’s a new engine, I understand that but this Super E better get better mileage than that in the future, I would be ok with at least 45 MPH, I might (after the 1,000 mile break-in) put in the next smaller size main jet, this ride today I was on open roads, not stopping too often.

So total mileage this weekend 325 + maybe 10 or so little more after the 53 mile break-in (rings) approx 385 miles that leaves 115 miles next weekend to hit the 500 mark and another oil and filter change, looks like I am almost half way there to the 1,000 mile mark, I have yet to either run this engine on the super slab or really gotten in to it yet, just up to 3500 RPMs , I can fell the power, even in 5th gear just rolling on the throttle, man it just goes ! it’s unbelievable, going up a slight grade on a state hiway, the down shifting days, are over : - )

Ride safe !

Well cj, it sounds like you had a good weekend. I will be riding this coming weekend! I just got all my flight info, I will be walking off the plane Thursday evening around 10pm and into the arms of my lovely bride and the two young men that my boys have become while I was gone.

I started out in the low 30's with my mileage, but it settled out around 40. On the open road I get better, but not sure of a number.

I have updated my saga of trying to get outta Iraq in this thread. https://www.hdforums.com/m_1531757/m...tm.htm#1538965

One of the best threads I have read on here in a long time. You are doing what I can only dream about doing right now. A shovel. Boy I wish I still had one. I know, you have heard that before. Situations arise and things are regretted. Maybe one day before I die.

Hay, thanks tbone52, but I came on this site looking for info on new low riders I was going to buy one, then as I read some posts about the heat problems, running lean, adding computer, updating a computer to change you’re A/C and pipes with a “map” maybe it works maybe it doesn’t ? O2 sensors, on a freakin bike ? believe me that is what turn me off for a new one, so when I made a choice of either re-building my engine the second time or a new complete I came to this shovel thread looking for info about S&S shovel engines, but nobody answered my post, I thought I guess not too many bikers here have S&S shovel’s so I just started to post to my own original post, really it was for anyone like me coming here looking for some info on performance, installation problems, what works, what doesn’t, lesson learn etc. I will just add posts to what I am doing a long the way, good or bad, good fixes or screw-ups on my part.

So I just started to list all the stuff I was going through and still going through, I did meet a good guy a Navy Iraq vet (now) who has a 93 ci complete shovel engine, ChiefGator gave me some great insight into that engine.

One last thing tbone52, I hadn’t a clue what I was getting into ? meaning what I ended up with, sure I knew it would be different, I really didn’t have a heads up in the begining on what to really expect, what it would be like with this engine and the Baker tranny was just the cream on top, it was a total surprise what I ended up with, of course I knew this would sound a little different, but it is still a shovel, I knew it would vibrate since it is hard mounted so that really didn’t change that much, but the sound, the idle, it’s so quiet meaning the internal sounds of a hd motor, if you had a shovel you know what I mean ! either myself or a riding buddy pull over sometimes (not often) but pull over and say “you hear that” ? trying to make out a certain noises or spinning sound from inside the engine, it was mostly in the early days : - ) after that we just paid no attention to noises until it would stop the bike , (only kidding : )

[font="times new roman"][color=#0000cc][size=3]You know the sound you hear when you know your listening to a worked engine either in a car or a bike ?, you know it’s not just loud exhaust, a really deep pounding sound, you hear that every once in awhile, one might not know all what was done to that engine, but you know something was done, because it’s not stock ! that is what I got with this 93 ci s

Did the 509 mile oil / filter change put back in AMSOIL 20-50 and a Custom Chrome oil filter, next the 1000 mark, I was going to dump the tranny lube, (running AMSOIL 75- 90) but decided to put on a few more miles but not over 1,000 miles.

Yesterday and today I got it in a little, and I broke a few rules in updating this shovel the number one rule, for all cars and bikes “when adding horse power, you must add “brake power” and rule number two, when almost everything is off the bike for this update in this example(only front end/tire and rear tire left on), “get the frame powder coated” no on both !

The rule number one is the most important, I got a but, I run dual rotors in front that is how it came, only the rear stock brake sucks more than the front two ! I already re-place it with a 4- piston (PM) Performance Machine more than night and day difference, that was 7 years ago, the front brakes I am going to switch to a single brake 4-piston (PM), but before I do that I need new lower glide tubes, so I can't order the new caliber, it’s a catch 22, I got to get the lowers first, but I have to get off the pot, this S&S 93 runs like hell, I need brakes ! my favorite gear is 5th man to jump on this from about 3000 to only 4500 is unbelievable ! love going down this little hill, and going up the largerone in front(my first passion is fast up hills) I remember doing that with the old motor, hay it was punched out a bit on the second re-build, it ran a bit, but I still remember “getting down” behind the “little” wind screen, to get as much as I could in 3rd to 4th going down and up the same hill, funny I didn’t notice until this morning I wasn’t doing that : - ) I don’t have too ! this freakin thing fly’s, I need new front brakes !

Be safe, ride safe !

It still all about the miles !

Well, like you said, when you up the Go, ya gotta up the Slow... That is why I did all the front end stuff to my ride. I have not done the rear brake yet, but I plan on it.

So, to piggy backon that thought I gotta tell ya about my stuff.

As you know, I had quite a bit done while I was gone. New wiring harness, speedo, tombstone taillight, Corbin seat, front wheel/rotor/caliper/chrome sliders, and handlebars. My bud was doing the work so my scoot would be ready when I go back. Well I get back late Thursday after over 50 hours of travel time. So around 10am Friday I am at the shop. And she is still all stripped apart...[:@]

It seems that there was an issue getting the Road King harness to fit and it took a bit more modifying to get it done. That set the whole project back. Then we found that the new "parts guy" gooned up the tail light order and ordered the wrong one.

So, I have gone the whole beautiful weekend without riding... Oh, and it is a race week (St Louis, AHDRA) my Bud is gone to the races with his race team. So, no work to be done till he gets back Tuesday. I am just hoping that it is all done by Wed so I can ride to Orlando on Thursday.

The guy is really hooking me up, with prices etc, but I am still bummed that I don't have it to ride.

Have the 1,000 miles on did the final 200 on Saturday, changed the oil (AMSOIL 20-50) and filter once more that is the third one, next is the next 1,000 miles it will work out great since my tripto Lake George, NY is next week since it’s approx 600 mile round trip that leaves me with 400 mile limit up there, every mile I put on now before the trip is less I can ride up there, so it’s zero miles until next week.
S&S still says to take it somewhat easy for the next 1,000 so I was going to take up the back way to most of NY Rt 209,, but hay as long as I don’t keep it at a steady speed on the interstate I should be ok and what really helps is that Baker 6 speed with true overdrive, all my miles so far has been on PA state roadways, in 6 speed, doing 60 MPH and doing 2200 RPM’s ! hay down to 5th speed it’s not quite lugging it but too close : - ) so on I87 shouldn’t be too bad varying the speed up and down.
I got to tell you I need a front brake I am using original twin rotors it’s not enough ! the last few hundred I been in it, I notice that 82 HP it really kicks a$$, so far haven’t been challenge on the road or light, tell you the truth I am looking forward to a twin cam : - )
Well I’ll be back with how it was on the trip, can’t wait for my friends in other states at Lake George to see it, really hear it ! all of them ride late models seems like all of them at one time or other has ask me over the years "when you going to replace it" : - )
I have an answer waiting "when you beat me" : - )
All take care ride safe,
cj
