Default RE: Engine break-in time !

Well all that worrying about the weather here in south eastern PA was for not, snow 3 to 6” was happening in Cape May, NJ approx 60 to 75 air miles southeast of me didn’t happen here yesterday, what did happen was when I walk into the cycle shop I do business with, the guy sent out my rear exhaust pipe to get welded adding an extra 2” of pipe in the neck to clear the Baker 6 speed tranny, it didn’t come back yet, ahh what ? didn’t this guy have it for almost a week ? yeah he did, well ? he said at first he ran out of argon gas was getting it and it should be here Friday or today (saturday) I will call you “if” he brings it in today, but it won’t be until much later (10:00 opening) this guy loves to sleep in, he most likely was partying last nigh ! who is this AH I asked ? he’s a certified aircraft body welder ! and what does “if” mean ? then I am sorry cj,it will have to be tuesday (close on Mondays), tuesday ? does he have the freakin gas ? because if he doesn’t I will buy it and bring it over too him I said, that wasn’t going to happen with the look the dealer was giving me, seeing how I said it, seeing how he wasn’t going to tell me where is guy lives !

I was a little more than disappointed, I was pissed off, who is this AH drunk that can’t finish a freakin job of welding a piece of exhaust pipe together in a week, didn’t he know this holds up a lot of people ? me for one ! I kept hearing when I was walking out the store, sorry this, sorry that, I turn back and said look this isn’t your fault, this is an AH fault, are your sure I can’t goand deliverhim some argon gas ? with that, he knew I wasn’t mad at him.

Anyway on the way home I didn’t feel like poor me, but I was really, really disappointed ! nice weekend for breaking it in very cool maybe 40 deds today, then Easter Sunday light traffic day ! then today I read Chief Gator reply to my latest post, it really brought it home for me, this minor bs problem that I won’t have my ride on the road yesterday, was minor indeed, reading what this guy has to go through on a daily bases, loosing people he knows or didn’t know but are with him over there doing a life and death job to help us at home, and I was worrying about stupid bs stuff like an exhaust pipe !

Thanks Chief, I will be on it when I am on it, you take care of yourself so you can come home too your beautiful wife, family and friends and of course your ride.

Well cj, I hope the weather clears for you and you get the pipes back soon.

Thanx for the well wishes. I am ok, and will be fine. I just need to tough it out a little longer and I can get the hell outta here.

Default Break-in ride

ChiefGator I hope all is well with you !!! Well the rear exhaust pipe finally came back the day I said "get that f-ing pipe back to me I will find someone to do it" ! not the shops fault, anyway it fit perfect, all bolted up ready to go Saturday and great day for breaking the engine in, high of 56 geds, this well be a little long since I will tell how I did it, every step, I think we all know how it played on my mind breaking in this new S&S 93 ci shovelhead engine with synthetic oil, don’t get me wrong I really like synthetic and believe in it, there was no data I found having a new shovelhead engine broken in on it, let alone run synthetic, as I stated a post or two back what turn me in to a believer was a call to S&S, they told me as I stated,.we did testing with synthetic with our shovelhead engines along with all other engines we make, that was it, if they sent me 4 qts of Mobile V Twin synthetic oil 20-50 and giving me a two year un-limited mileage warranty, who am I or anyone else to question it, any non-believers out there, hay this is for S&S complete engine and not half rebuild or total kits to overhaul into a new engine, that you must take up with S&S. I primed the engine with the synthetic oil their way "they don’t want air-bubbles" ! started it up, damn first thing I notice is the pumping, damn what a sound ! next was the Cycle Shack FL/FLH exhaust with mufflers not baffles in them, damn louder than my old F.U.B.A.R. double wall pipes ! I can’t believe the sound this motor is putting out, of course I knew it would sound a little different but this is not just putting in a new race cam in a stock motor ! it’s so deep sounding, just pounding, but not all pipe noise ! so frenkin pumping ! As you know the gas in the tank is Shell premium without any "10 % ethanol corn crap in it" I mention this awhile back I drove 60 miles round trip for 7 gals to the next county for it, no way I was breaking in this motor with junk ! I put it in neutral a little hard to do ! damn I didn’t take enough off the clutch plates ! the new packs, I run a Rivera Pro clutch and put a new set in, as with the first set I had to file the cut outs of the plates to fit right on the hub, I guess I didn’t file enough, damn, well see if I will be lucky and simple working the clutch will correct this, if not it’s take out the plate and re-file them, damn ! I took off mid-morning yesterday had the route planned 50 mile run, first 10 miles out stop at a diner this baby is going to cool down ! I looked at the oil pressure gauge it’s at idle 20 PSI ! damn with the old engine I have to be doing 55 MPH ! I next look at my oil temp gage in the oil tank, holy crap it’s only 150 degs ? what the hell is going on ! this is a new engine it’s got to run hotter than this ! I took IR temp readings on the heads F-350 R-340 degs, I thought it would be a little hotter but that is it ! I remember I didn’t bring my oil cooler cover, damn ! as I went into the dinner for a take out coffee coming out I just I got to cover this thing up, so I took a cigar (cheap cigars box : ) cut it open and tape it over the front of the cooler, ok better than nothing, (see pic) its approx

A few days more and packed up !!!! nice, real nice ! another 3 MONTHS !!!! man someone is looking over you Chief !!

The best thing I learn “after the first fifty” was listening to the idle after changing the oil and filter, just listening to the oil say fill all the gaps : - ) about a minute into it, I notice it, all the noise and things in a stock hd shovel motor are missing ! that’s because S&S turned this engine is the latest with all the close tolerances, better metals, better engineering, that is whats missing, the noise ! no wonder the guys at the shop said when they heard it, it sounds like a hop-up twin cam without the chain ! those motors are done with the same kind of engineering. It’s amazing what you can pick up, by the silence inside the engine !

Oh I knew you were kidding just as you knew I was [8D]

The scary thing is that in that pic I am short a few rows. You didn't know you were chatting withChesty Puller all this time, now did ya?

I just got my flight confirmation. Fly outta here Sat morning, will be in Kuwait about a week, then home around the 26th. I am not sure what the internet connection will be like when I am in Kuwait, so you may not hear from me for a while.

Have a good one and keep your rubber side down,
Bo
