Default rear speakers for a FLHTCi

for the brainiacs amoungsts us,

can, will, or does existing wiring harnesses and connections on an FLHTCi accomodate the addition of rear speakers, ot will I have to run wires from the stock radio to the speakers? If new wires are required is there an H-D wiring harness to do this?

I may be wrong, but I don't believe that the radio on an Electraglide Classic will support rear speakers at all, however, I do believe that Hogtunes makes a kit that supplies an amp to power the fronts and lets the radio power the rears that come with the kit, but I'm not sure if it is for 06's or just for 05's and earlier. www.hogtunes.com should give you all the info you need, and they are standup folks with good products.

Teu

Edit: Just checked their site, and they do have the kit for 06-07. It's $500 and includes speakers and speaker boxes. I believe they offer a discount for forum members too.

On my 96 E Glide Classic, the original owner, a HD tech, had installed the HD Ultrarear speaker kit, withthe passenger volume and tape deck control and additional power amplifier. There is Harness a plenty under the Tour Pack.I have not check into where it originates.
I can't address any model beyond the 01 TC. I am going to mod my wifes trike this summer. The rear speakers show on my 96 Evo in the attachment.

Check out an E Glide Goodies site for aftermarket radio and speaker upgrades.

Default RE: rear speakers for a FLHTCi

Hey there

Here is an exerpt from a FAQ sheet im goona put on my site one of these days--Hope it helps...PEZ

On 98-05 bikes, the factory radio will power 2 speakers only. In order to power more speakers, an amplifier must be present. The HD rear speaker kit for these years puts their amp under the tour pak, and powers the rear speakers (the radio powers the fronts). The “best” sound stays behind the rider and a detach tour-pak becomes VERY difficult to do.

On 06/07 bikes, the factory radio “can” power 4 speakers, but comes pre-programmed to run the 2 front speakers only. If the 06/07 HD rear speaker kit is added, the dealer must do a re-flash with his “HD Digital Technician” to turn on the rear speakers through the bikes ECM--which is usually a $75 charge to the customer. The customer must then buy the HD “Ultra Overlay Harness” to access the rear speaker “pins” on the back of the radio ($124.95 MSRP). Finally, the rear speaker kit can be added ($432.95 MSRP). This totals $632.90 before labor for 2 more stock speakers and no amplifier! Ultrasound installs seamlessly with no dealer re-flash required, which makes it a great choice for everyone including independent dealers or the “do it yourself” customer.

My buddy has an '06 FLHTCI and went the Harley route described by PEZ: rear speakers, mounting boxes requiring drilling the tour pack, an underlay harness from the TP, under the seat, under the fuel console, and into the fairing; then a reflash at the dealers to tell the ECM that the radio now had rear speakers. He's happy with the set-up, but the prices were as PEZ described less 20% and no sales tax purchased from Zanotti's.

Pez,
I have seen, and like your Hogtunes system.
But it does you no justice to not be technically honest when talking about your competition.
When the 06-07 is flashed, it enables the fade controls, and the AMPLIFIED speaker circuit for the rear speakers.
FLTCUI has an 80watt factory installed H/K radio.
FLTCI has the same radio installed, just with only two speaker circuits activated. The flash activates the other two 20 watt channels(80 watt net)and the fader feature.

All speaker circuits in the H/K radio areInternal-amplified to 20 watt output per circuit(channel).

So to install The HOGTUNES system, you STILL need to mount boxes onto the tourpak, youSTILL need to route wires from the front of the bike to the rear(Harness is included in kit),You need to ADD an 48 Watt Amplifier(External to the radio) that drives the rears speakers.(8 watt net gain). And you also have the quick disconnect for ease of removal.

Your overall system is a great deal for pre 06 radios. But if I was the one upgrading my 06 FLTCI, I would buy your speakers, and have my radio Flashed.(It would take addingthe four wires from your harnessto the existing radio plug)

Just an idea here, but maybe you could offer a 4 speaker kit, with harness ready to plug and play, two replacement speakers for the front, and pods. speakers for the rear on a 06 and above H/K system.

I would actually prefer what you just suggested. I want to be able to retain the fader function. and would prefer OEM pieces. But I do like HT speakers

Hey Steel

You are correct the radio will make 80 watts--but thats according to HD--the ACTAUL power out put is around 15 watts per channel....or less. Our amplifier makes a MINIMUM of 24 watts per channel.Based on the the way most guys lie about their power ratings, I could have easily called our amp 40 watts per channel. Even if you run the HD system, you still have to buy the HD stock speakers--as they come with the kit. Also, the MAXXBASS feature on our amp radically improves the bass response, something NO other system has.

Probobly the most misunderstood feature of Ultrasound is that the amplifier runs the front speakers. The speakers that come in the kit also go in the front and run off the amplifier--this way, we know the BEST sound is always infront of the rider--right where it belongs. The stock speakers get moved to the rear (or upgraded speakers) and get run off the radio--even with the tour pak off, the rider still has the benefits of the amp running the front speakers.I think once I post the overview of the system online, it will be clear that Ultrasound is really a system overhaul--not just a rear speaker kit. If you want me to email you this overview--drop me a note.

Now for the reflash--I think it apolling that we have to PAY to get the rear outputs turned on--what a hose job that is! On the back of the radio on non-ultras, there is a 24 pin plug sitting there. The only way to access the rear speaker outputs is to buy the Ultra Overlay harness that plugs into this 24 pin plug. The wire hrness that comes with the HD rear speaker kit plugs into this overlay harness(another hose job).

To answer your question about a kit that plugs into the factory radio--I would only do this if I could crack the software so guys wouldnt have to go to the dealer to have the rears turned on. Also, I would have to pay to "tool" a plug to go in the back of the radio which would be BIG $$ and make it cheaper to add the amplifier. A non HD plugwould alsovoid warranty

I hope you not taking my reply as me being pissy at all--not the case! I considered all options when I took delivery of one of te first 06 EGC's in Canada. I have the HD rear speaker kit and overlay harness here (if you wanna buy it cheap) but I have the Ultrasound kit on my bike. It sounds way better costs less than the HD system, and I can hear CD's clearly at 90mph while riding behind other bikes.
