Default helmets..more helmet questions

hey guys, im sure this has been talked about before but here it goes again. i've been riding for about 5 years now and never have worn a helmet. the wife wants me to wear one od the freeways at least. which i can understand. now i've looked at the local harley shops and when i try them on they appear to be huge on my head. and i hear everyone talking about carbonfiberhelmets.com. is this the only option there is out there? when i watch like american choppers and jesse james they dont have huge helmets on. i wonder where they get theirs? any ideas are welcome.unfortunately the only way i'll wear a helmet is if it looks decent. thanks again

Helmets that are DOT will not look good on. The closest are the half helmets, which I use.

Most of the helmets that you see those guys wearing are novelty helmets and not DOT approved, thus not legal in any state that requires a helmet let alone safe if something were to happen. If you want to wear a novelty helmet you might as well not be wearing anything at all. Unfortunately all legal helmets give one a bit of a mushroom head so to speak,

Check out the Bikers Den at http://www.bikersden.com/shop/shopexd.asp?id=652

They (along with many out there on the net) purport to have 'the smallest' DOT approved helmet available. I think you might find something close to what you have in mind; particularly with the Daytona Skull Cap model. As has been mentioned above, the types of helmets worn by the OCC, Jesse James, et al crew are novelty helmets; commonly found at any rally or swap meet. They are cosmetic at best and serve (in my opinion) no tangible function in terms of crash protection. As all of us know, looking cool is ..... well......cool. But if you're of the mindset to wear a lid (which I'm all for personal choice on that deal), then you should at least wear one that's going to 'help' save your bacon. Lastly, buying a helmet over the net is (for me, anyhow) somewhat of a crap shoot. It doesn't give you the opportunity to size the thing up physically. Even if the sizes are the same, many manufacturers helmets will simply have a different 'fit' from that of the other. Again, even if they are both of purportedly the same size. After allyou don't want to end up with that 'Laurel and Hardy' look, now do ya? Personally, when I elect to wear a helmet, it's generally Harley's Spoiler model.

If you want a helemt to fit well, a fullface that is, go to a shop and find a comfortable helmt, then order it online to save some $if that is an issue for you.

You might consider that if you only have half a brain, wear half a helmet. Put on what ever you think your head is worth !!

When I was in the hospital recovering from my accident in August, the Orthopedic surgeon came to talk to me. He said it was guys like me that don't wear helmets that keep him in business. But I was lucky and didn't get whacked on the head too bad. Most guys he worked on had their heads pretty busted up. There was guy in another room that was fighting for his life with severe head damage. Your choice, your life.
