You can do the swap out of wheels if:
The Sportster wheel is a late model (2004 and up) and has a 1 inch axle like yours.
The Sportster has a narrow hub. If your present hub is a narrow (i.e., you do not have a Wide-Glide) the swap can be easily done .
If however, you have a wide glide, then you will have to lace the 21 inch rim to your wide hub. This will require a new set of spokes because those off the narrow glide will not be long enough.....pg
so essentially, even though the dyna front end is now different than a sportster front end, its still a narrow hub wheel assembly? are they just different size spacers between the forks and hub? so a narrow hub with 1" axle should do it. i want to build a 21" 60 spoke rim. need to find the right hub to starts with.
I think 05 was the first year for a 1" axle on the Sportster, and 2007 has a 25mm axle.
But, the Sportster hub is not the same width asyour Street Bob hub. Therefore theSportser hub will not fit properly between yoursliders. Maybe custom wheel spacers can be made to fit.
Once I decide to go with the 21" wheel, I only found 2 solutions.
1. Lace Sportster rim to my hub.
2. Use Wide Glide trees, and wheel.
Wanting a 60 spoke wheel was not mentioned before. That is an entirely different issue. You cannot use any of the parts you have on your standard wheel.
You have only two choices in this case:
1st choice)
Buy a hub with 60 holes (I don't know where you will find that) and then buy a rim with 60 holes, and last of all buy a set of 60 spokes and nipples (of the correct length). Last of all...if you cannot lace and true the wheel yourself then you will have to pay someone to do it for you.
2nd choice)
Buy an aftermarket wheel. Buy yourself a complete 60 spoke all chromed up wheel that you can bolt on directly out of the box.
For some reason, I think choice #2 is for you........pg
......and has a 1 inch axle like yours.
The Sportster has a narrow hub. If your present hub is a narrow (i.e., you do not have a Wide-Glide) the swap can be easily done .
that's what i thought. i could have swore that i heard that the new sporster front ends and the dyna front ends were the same narrowgide front ends...forks and all....?
i guess not.
i don't understand why the moco doesn't offer a straight purchase for a 21in laced wheel for the front of the newer dynas!!!!
waterman....
I too thought the front ends were the same. That is why I told you the swap is easy if your hub widths were the same. The axle went to 1 inch in 2004. Both the Sportster and Dyna were changed.
I have a 2003 Dyna with a 3/4 inch axle and it had a 19 inch cast wheel. I wanted a 21 inch so I bought a Sportster wheel off a 2001 Sporty that was an aluminum hub with a chrome steel wheel (21 inch). Since I wanted to build my own wheel with an aluminum rim and stainless spokes I was going to tear the wheel down and relace it.
Before doing so, I put the Sporty wheel on my Dyna to see how it fit and cleared the fender. It was like I was putting my own wheel on the bike. Everything fit perfect, the Dyna spacers, the brake disc slid right into the calipers. I rebuilt and the new Ankrondt wheel fit just as easy.......pg
