Default Cruise for heritage

I'm riding an ultra right now but before that I had a heritage softail classic.&nbsp\\; Out of 5 harleys and an ultra now, I still liked my heritage as probably my favorite.&nbsp\\; I wished I could have kept it besides trading in&nbsp\\;for the ultra.&nbsp\\;I have considered going back to a heritage but one thing I believe I would miss is the cruise control I have now if I go back to a heritage.&nbsp\\; Is there any thing out there that works like a "real" cruise like the touring bikes.&nbsp\\; Seems like there was some rumor going around for the 09s that something like that may come out but you&nbsp\\;know how those are around right now.&nbsp\\; &nbsp\\;I'm not an engineer and don't know if one could even be hooked up for a heritage.&nbsp\\; Anyway, just thought I'd ask if anyone in this forum could give me some insight. Thanks

I started to look around for a cruise when I bought my 2000 Heritage from a buddy in May.&nbsp\\; Thought I would really like to have cruise as my hand cramped a lot.&nbsp\\; I *almost* had the HD dealer put one on for a ton of dough.&nbsp\\; Then I found the answer!&nbsp\\; Best $15 I ever spent!&nbsp\\; http://www.throttlemate.com&nbsp\\;
&nbsp\\;
And if you end up not liking it, you won't be dinged for much.&nbsp\\; I think you'll like it!

I bought one of the throttlemates for my bike, then wound up buying 2 more.&nbsp\\; One for the g/f's sporty and another for a friend of mine.&nbsp\\; A cheap easy fix then buying the full kit from a stealer.

You can hook up a true cruise control, just like the one on your Ultra or car. But they cost a ton of bucks (about a grand) and unless your planning on a LOT of 1000 mile type trips I'm not sure its worth all that much. You would have to make that kind of decision for yourself.
Personally I can't ride more than 25 or 30 miles at a clip before my hand cramps up really bad because of an accident that broke my elbow and wrist many moons ago. So I put on a 'Throttle Locker' to let me take my hand off to work out the 'kinks' every so often.
I tried the plastic Throttle Rocker thing that fits around the grip. But while it lats you relax your grip, you still can't take your hand off the grip.
The Throttle Locker replaces the normal star thumb screw with a large handle that is easy to use even with gloves on. But unlike most of the other thumb screw replacements it also includes a tap to re thread the control housing for a coarser thread size so it takes less rotational movement of the lever&nbsp\\;to lock the grip. It only takes about&nbsp\\;90 degrees of rotation to completely&nbsp\\;lock the grip with&nbsp\\;little or no drag when its off.
Its not the cheapest option, but its a lot cheaper than a real cruise control would be.

&nbsp\\;
This is what it looks like on my bike when in the off position.

The polished look of the locker looks pretty cool, Citoriplus, but retapping / replacing the thumbscrew&nbsp\\;makes it an absolute comittment. For 12 bucks and a couple more for shipping, the throttlemate.com one is a cheap option for testing if this type of device will cut it&nbsp\\; for you vs a full on cruise control retrofit.
&nbsp\\;
Installation is less than a minute (just need a small flathead for set screw tightening) and the travel distance on mine is possibly even a bit less than your 90 degrees, and works great with gloves.&nbsp\\;Locker or Mate, looks like we are both reaching with our&nbsp\\;thumbs!&nbsp\\;I'm definitely sold on the mate, and might even have mine chromed while dipping some other items!
&nbsp\\;
*Plus,* if you end up not liking the throttlemate, you can always take it off in a couple seconds and use it as a tiny c-clamp if you are building a bird house or something!!

I found this throttle lock at JC Whiney for $20. Works good and is clove friendly. Mounts with two of the screws for the brake cylinder. Keeps throttle locked a one setting so up hill you lose a little speed and down hill you pick up a littel speed, but you can still turn throttle with it engaged to adjust speed accordingly. I like it. [sm=happybounce.gif]&nbsp\\; I attched some photos.
