Default Vibration Fixed! MOCO screwed up! (long)

This was the problem as I described it in my earlier post:

Has anyone else noticed that you get a significant vibration increase between 2500 and 3000 rpm? Below 2500 and above 3000 it runs smooth. I can feel it in the highway pegs and through the seat.
I took my 05 Ultra to my dealer, but they said the mount was not bad and the vibration was normal. I know it is a Harley, and they vibrate and make noise, but I don’t think this is normal. I have an XM radio mounted on my faring and it gives me a great visual representation of the vibration. Below 2500rpm you can read the display and see the numbers clearly. At 2500rpm the display vibrates so bad you cannot even read it and then above 3000rpm it is clear again.

I ordered the new style mount, part # 16207-79c and a new bolt and nut as well. When the parts came in, the bolt was way to large a diameter for the hole in the mount. I thought they sent the wrong bolt. I decided I would use the old bolt and change the mount anyway.
This is what they sent.

When I got the old mount off, I discovered that the hole in the mount was way to large for the bolt that was in it.
Here is a pic. the way it came from the factory.

My theory is that the factory started switching to the new mount with a smaller diameter hole sometime in 05. My bike is an 05. They probably decided to use up the supply of old mounts, but got some of the new bolts mixed in and the assemblers did not notice that the bolt diameter was wrong.

Here are the 2 mounts.

Correct old style mount/bolt combo.

Correct new style mount/bolt combo.

What do you all think?

I think you should send this whole deal to the MoCo and complain!

Worst case, they should re-imburse you for the materials.

Hard to believe dealer didn't find this when they checked it out.

I took my mount apart a couple of weeks ago. My mount looks like the old style mount in your picture. Would you happen to know what size wrench you used on the larger bolt? I reassembled mine assuming that there wasn't a problem but it looks like I may need a larger bolt. I also have an 05 and do have a vibration complaint. Thanks for the info!

Nice Find, and nice report. I would call MOCO too on it. I would even print off the photos, and take them back to the dealer too.

I have an 05 Ultra manufactured in June 05. While making various mods I changed from the old 16207-79B style to the new 16207-79C mount. Maybe I'm missing something but I used the old/exisiting bolt without issue. The holes were the same size, about 3/8 inch? The bolt was a much finer thread that what your picture shows. I tightened the bolt and then backed it off so it would not totally compress the rubber.

I have the M-1182 Service Bulletin and both the old and new pictured are what I had. Afterwards I noticed a reduction in the motor vibration and handlebar shake at idle. Which I don't quite understand because the new mount is a harder mount than the old. Maybe it's because I backed the bolt off a little on the new mount.

I saw no visible flaws in the old mount but I also came close to installing the new mount upside down if it were not for the SB. As you probably know the old style was stamped with "TOP" to ensure proper orentation, the new style is not.

Your pictures of the two mounts look correct to me. It's the bolts that seem to differ. All three bolts are the same dia and thread The Center mount bolt is just longer. I hope these pictures of my installed 79C help show the difference between what you and I have.

Bob

Thanks for the reports and photos, guys.

My bike shakes on idle, but I thought that was just the Harley way. Doesn't bother me. Smooths out once I take off. I don't notice any vibration at any rpm above idle. Is shaking at idle a sign the mount may be defective?

To follow up,
the hole in the old mount is 1/2 inch and the hole in the new mount is 3/8 inch. I ordered the new mount from Zanati and asked them to send me a new bolt as well. I did not know the part number. The bolt they sent was 1/2 inch. Fits perfect in the old mount. I have flown and worked on airplanes and helicopters all my life, and never have I seen a 3/8 bolt used in a 1/2 inch bushing. I can only assume that the larger bolt is to be used in the old mount and the smaller bolt is ONLY to be used in the new mount.

I would like to know what setup everyone else has.

You can read it here: http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/...hog3/M1182.pdf

You should also read this thread for more information:

My engine shakes less at idle and I can read the GPS at all speeds. At least up to 100 :=]. I owuld expcet less engine shaking due to the hader rubber. I thought there would be an increase in the frame but that did not happen. Actually smoother.

I'm glad I changed mine out. It bothered me ever since I read Bountyhunters post of his coming apart but my old mount looked fine.
