Default USB Audio Quality and Format Question

Hello, I read through The audio section but could not find an answer to my question it all started to run together. I am currently using a SanDisk cruiser USB 8 GB USB drive formatted in fat32. I tried using a 16 gB but I couldn't get it to format in fat32 and it just said no readable data when plugged into my bike. I just transfered all my music from iTunes onto the SanDisk 8 gb usb drive. I think all songs are iat 128kbps. Is there a higher audio quality I could say the songs in or would I even be able to tell a difference?

Thanks for the help!

I have not done it yet but if I'm correct you need to make sure your folders are correct on USB. I'm still getting knowledgable of the whole new audio system on my 15 FLRXS

As far as audio quality, make sure your music files are in a "loss-less" format. ITunes allows you to rip music from CDs in Apple Lossless Format, which is a bit by bit copy of the data from the CD to iTunes.

It takes up more space, of course. Not sure if the increased audio quality would be noticeable on a bike.

Default UlitySB audio quality

Lossless is absolutely the way to go. Everybody's ears are different but I can sure tell the difference between 128 and lossless. Also the USB input from an IPOD or whatever beats the hell out of using the old mini plug.

128kbps MP3's are about as bad sounding as you can get. You could save them in any of the higher mp3 rates and get an improvement in quality as you go up to "Lossless". Each higher rate takes up more space per song.

A good compromise is 320kbps. I'm a recording engineer and we use 320kbps mp3's to judge mixes. Does Lossless sound better? Hell yes. Could most people tell a good 320 kbps MP3 from lossless with a helmet on and the wind blowing by at 70 mph? I'm gonna say no to that.

Thanks, since all my songs in iTunes are at 128 is there a way to upgrade them to 320?

No, you would have to go back to the original source and re encode. The damage is already done.

320 does have better sound quality than 128. BUT, I really don't thing it will make that big of difference with the wind in your face and your pipes humming down the road.

To test for yourself, rip one song at 128 and 320, go for a ride and see if you can tell the difference. Better yet, if you have a smart phone just fire up some Pandora, its 128k.

Going forward, I would only rip at 320 or higher. Memory cheap and you never know where you might be playing these files.
