I was thinking the same thing and in an earlier post (#18) I asked Wilbert that question. Several people responded that the level has be checked standing straight up but Wilbert never responded. If that picture was taken on the side stand then you are correct, both levels would probably be right.

Sorry, my picture was taken on the lift so it's a straight up reading. Ripsaw, I usually end up putting in about a 1.5 Qts or so. I use a pump and hose for the primary so I cant say for certain. Interesting thought about the red level possibility while on the jiffy stand. I'm going to get a ride in today so I don't feel like pulling the cover again. I'll chime back in at the 5k service :-)

Unbelievable ... all I can say is if you're still under warranty, you best comply with the service manual. Otherwise ... good luck. For those of you who think some guy working at the Harley Davidson dealer is the best thing since sliced bread, I hope you're checking their work. I just had on tell me I should be checking the air in my tires after they've warmed up!!! You can not argue with black and white ... well at least I used to think that until this thread. I mean all we're talking about here is the amount of fluid in our primary. God forbid we discuss which cam is best for two-up touring.

I didn't mean to create such a debate. I was asking my op question because the parts guy at the dealer said I only needed one qt. When I got home I saw that I needed 38oz according to the repair manual. My softail takes 26oz if I remember right and, my shovelhead doesn't take any primary oil. I did purchase another qt of formula plus and will do what the manual says. As long as it will take it.

just put in what your service manual calls for on my bike its 38 ounces the service manual does not state on the jiffy stand or straight up , for the primary the tranny and oil dipsticks , have on them, the words, ck on the jiffy stand

I'll be doing my engine, trans and primary and cleaning the air filter in a couple of weeks, about another 400 miles. I plan on 38 ozs in the pri, but first warming up the bike real well so that i can get as complete a drain of all the old oil as i can. Also allowing probably significantly more time than HD does to insure its all out.

When ever i change oil in anything you have to warm it up well and give it time to get the old out, probably will still be an ounce in/on the gears, then add the new oil slowly checking the levels. Lets put it this way, i wouldn't make any money doing oil changes. Even tho this is a simple straight forward procedure, this nothing to rush thru.

Might be more left in there, according to the manual "dry" capacity is 45 oz., an extra 7 oz. hiding in there somewhere.

Your welcome, manual does say 38 for a change, 45 dry. I (and I think most) put in 38 as per the manual...

I do all three holes by sight. Dipstick on the engine and transmission and by sight on the primary.
