My advice...it's summer riding season so wait until bike's stowed for winter. I took my time w/bar swap so it was a week+ project (start to finish). It's best to assess the steps, document your assy (I sketched wiring harnesses), take pics before/after and lube the sh@t out of the bars to ease wire pulls. It's only as complex as you want it to be. Remember, your bard and controls were assembled so they can be torn apart and re-assembled...it's not that hard of a deal and you get to learn the bike so dig in...later.
I got a set of new (less than 100 miles) gloss black 14" KST Mayhems pre-wired internally with heated grips already installed. They're just a-sittin' here. ;-) I decided to go down to 12's so I just bought a whole new set in case I wanted to put the 14's back on.. I won't..
You don't need new cables, you will have to reroute the existing ones though. That's easy, cut a few zip ties to loosen up some room. This when they were on mine :
Don't listen to THAT guy and wait til winter. It's take an evening to swap the bars yourself, just a few hours if you're prepared. Hardest part was wiring the bars, after that it's easy. The ones I have here are plug-and-play.
You won't need to worry about lines up to 16's, only wiring. Depending on what bars you get, it may be worth your while to spend the hundred bucks on the cvo tbw assembly to eliminate the green connector to make running the wires easier. I had 12" vindiktas on mine for a year, you could still use the fairing mirrors if you ducked a bit to look under your arms. When I did my 16's I eliminated the fairing mirrors and went with traditional mirrors on the perches, but there were no issues using fairing mirrors with them.
Just finished installing LA Choppers 12" Twin Peaks on our 14 SG.
Biggest suggestion. Replace the stock TBW assembly with the CVO setup. Eliminates the garbage connectors that broke when pulling through. Yep, found that out after all was back together......F..K ME.
The CVO TBW is for up to 13'. You will need to change the connector pins and you'll be all set.
I started to do a write up on it, while doing my swap last week. The biggest tip I have is to take lots of pictures of the connectors if you disassemble them and use a chain to drop through the bars to pull the wires. I supported the inner fairing by ratchet strapping it to my garage door opener, after removing the outer shell. I went ahead and bought the manual so I would have all of the torque specs for everything. PM me if you have any questions.
It's an intimidating job, but fairly straight forward.
