Default Ape Install

Is the time of year...
I see several threads on the subject, but hoping to hear from those of you who have done the install for a couple tips.

I have a 2014 SGS...

Looking for Apes that don't obscure my mirrors (I am 5'10")--- debating between 12inch and 14inch apes. Suggestions?

I see in multiple threads about its easy to do, just time consuming. Anyone know of anywhere that there is a step by step walkthrough for our bikes?? Everything I see shows a torn down batwing and parts everywhere..

If I were to do it myself (saving me $1000 from dealer) I want to review some type of guide..

Thanks!

I installed 12" it does block the existing mirrors so I added bunny ear mirrors. My buddy has 14" and those seem to be enough above the mirrors to see. Installation was a breeze, just be careful when you lift and rest the fairing to access the back bolts, it can drop and land on your front fender.... Dont ask me how I know

Plus 1 don't ask me either.
14" bars work great with the fairing mirrors 12s will work just have to look under your arm a little bit.
You will have to extend the wiring on the 12s-and 14s
The cables are close to use for 12s but not for 14s. I used the LA Choppers 12-14" cable kit and I suggest guerrilla cables wiring extensions and a service manual. The hardest part and the most time consuming part is pulling wires internally , this depends on what type of bars you are wanting.

Just about every bar manufacture measures their bar height differently - Yaffe for example are 2" taller than listed so a 12" Yaffe is actually 14"
As far as using the stock mirrors it will not be until you mount the bars where you like them that you will know: seat height, bar height, bar angle, etc will all be different from rider to the next, if your stock mirrors are blocked it's not the end of the world, mount a set either on top or bottom of your handlebar controls. I mounted mine on the bottom.

I installed 12" Twin Peaks and the fairing mirrors were useless. I'm 6'.

I think you should get the bars that are the most comfortable and don't worry about the fairing mirrors. If you have to, install regular mirrors.

This helped me greatly when I installed my bars.

On that fairing... take the the 3 bolts out for the windshield.. take the windshield off, "" put the center bolt back in, to keep the fairing from falling when you take all the bolts out... get out there and look at your bike,,, take the bolts loose. tighten them up... get familiar with your bike... You will be WTF have I done at first.. "You can do it!!"
You will more than likely have problems with the wiring. ONLY reason I say that, it can be a beech to run those wires, and then again, it depends on your bars you get. Like said above, I have the "12" inch yaffee bars, and I'm here to tell you, they are far from 12's! 14's all day long. This is the MAXIMUM you can go without having to change the cables.

@junglejoe--thanks for the post and support..
I think I need the service manual before embarking on this journey.

So if I get 14inch KST bars, I won't need to replace the cables..or 12inch Jaffe..
