Default Heated Grips Fail

Tonight I experienced a BCM freeze that wasn't related to the Infotainment system. I did a quick start on the bike (ignition on, crank as soon as check engine light went out). Normally I switch to the ACC position & wait to start until the NAV system on the radio comes ready, then switch to ON, wait for check engine to go out, then crank. With this particular start, the radio worked properly, but the heated grips wouldn't work at all.

Stopped for gas & decided to power off everything & use my normal start sequence. After the restart, the heated grips worked just like normal.

This supports my contention the the Infotainment freezes riders report are really issues with the BCM, not the radio itself.

Default Heated grips

Were these the stock grips or aftermarket?

Stock - they're standard on the Limited.

I also have a 14 FLHTK but I rarely use the heated grips and have not experienced any problems. I'll have to give them a try to see if I get the same problem as Hammz. As far as starting the bike, I turn on the ignition switch and hit the start button. Never wait for any lights or radio. I do find that my radio does what ever it wants. Most of the time I have it off and when I start the bike it says off. Occasionally I shut the bike down with the radio on and I've restarted the bike later and the radio will stay off. I think it has a mind of it's own.

I have to agree with Hammz on this. I have noticed that if I pause for a brief time after powering on , hit the accept button and then start after everything is up and running, I have no "quirky issues". On the other hand if I don't pause, and start prematurely, I have noticed some "quirky " stuff. One quirk is losing the ability to forward or skip songs, from my iTunes.

I do the "wait till it's all booted up before starting" thang, too.

Pretty ridiculous, but since the MOCO can't produce electronics that behave like every other system on earth, I guess that's the best I can hope for.

So far, though, everything seems to work fine as long as I do this.

Can you imagine the complaints from car owners if they had to wait for the systems in the vehicle to fully boot up before starting the vehicle. That company would be out of business in no time. But us dopes keep buying Harley products, so why should they do anything about it.

My GPS doesn't boot up right away in my car, nor does my handheld unit. As far as the radio in the car, it doesn't play off my usb stick or ipad. I also don't have an integrated CB or weather band in my car. I don't have an intercom in the car (obviously don't need it).

My laptop takes a few minutes to boot up and the complexity of the infotainment system is approaching the complexity of a laptop. I don't get excited when it doesn't boot up immediately. There are probably things that the MoCo can do to speed things up, and I'd like to see that happen, but until then it's not a big deal. I turn on the ignition first, and by the time I get suited up with jacket, helmet and gloves, everything's ready to go.

I have never waited for anything to boot up before starting my Limited.
I turn the key on, flip the stop/run switch to run and hit the start button.

Never had any issues.

About the time I start rolling, the "accept screen" comes on and I push the right joystick with my thumb and continue on my way.

There really is no need to wait.

Default Fortunate one

You are indeed fortunate. I regularly have problems if i don't wait. Perhaps they have changed something on the newer bikes.
