Default 2016 RGS Engine Oil

Breaking in my Road Glide Special (440 miles) and down a little oil. Dealer advised not to top off with Syn 3, which I have at home. I can't get there before an extended ride tomorrow. What is the oil that came with the bike and that I should use too top it off? Thanks.

It should be Harley 20/50. I was always told break in should be done with a petroleum based oil for first 1K. I don't think a little Syn 3 will hurt anything, it's a blend anyway. I always change break in oil after first 500 mi.

If you are "down a little" leave it alone.
May have been that way from the factory.
Check again in a few hundred miles. If you are down further I would start to watch carefully.
You shouldn't be "using" any noticeable oil in 440mi.
And over filling will cause blow-by.

Adding a little syn3 to top it off isn't going to hurt anything. I believe the bike comes with regular HD 20w50 not break in oil. If you are down just a little you could leave it be and it will be fine. The CVO bikes come with syn3 already in them so that tells me that the engine will break in just fine with it.

Much appreciated. The first couple of hundred miles the digital oil dipstick read full, so I assume I burned a little oil. I may take the advice of changing out at 500 miles (and then again at the 1000 mile service when it will be dyno'd). Speaking of that, should the bike be dyno'd with new oil or should the oil be changed out after the dyne?

What is the purpose of changing at 500?

If it reads full, you shouldn't have any worry. I run mine halfway between Add and Full. Are you doing a Stage 1 at 1k? If not, why are you going to dyno the bike? Seems like a waste of money if you're not pulling the Cat and changing pipes, intake and adding a tuner. That said, I'd dyno it after you change to Syn 3 (if that is what your intention is).

Unless you use 3 bars of the 4 on your digital dipstick, you shouldn't need to add oil. Once you get down to the last bar, then you are a quart low and if that happens before you get to 1000k miles, then you need be be at a dealer anyway.

Mad Monk, You're right about the need for a dyno only under certain circumstances. When i took delivery, I already had Vance & Hines true duals, HD Super Tuner, Stage 1, and SE slip ons. The dealer used a stock map until my 1k service as they did not want to take the bike to the redline before 1k.

You bike came with HD 20/50. HD also states that using sny3 has no effect on breakin.
What they do not recommend is mixing oil type.
Buy a quart of HD 20/50 add what you need and ride.
