Surviving the mean streets
I was warned about moving back to FL and the bad drivers. Barely two months back and this happened ...
On Saturday I was leaving a parking lot after lunch and needed to turn left. The street is divided by a median with two lanes in each direction. I waited until the lights down each direction stopped traffic and I exited the parking to four empty lanes. After I made the initial turn to the inside median lane I started to merge over to my right. I knew all lanes were clear when I pulled out but as I checked over my right shoulder I saw the left front fender of a grey sedan that had not been there when I pulled out from the restaurant. She apparently jumped out from the apartment complex driveway I was just passing. I swerved back away from the lane but the car accelerated forward. The highway peg on my engine guard was hooked by the left front fender well of the car. The peg bent and eventually broke, releasing me from the car and the jagged mounting arm scraped the entire length of her car. The car never slowed or applied the brakes (no brake lights were ever visible). When the car continued to make the right hand turn onto the next street I followed. At the next traffic light I pulled along side and informed her that she hit me. Her response was - no, she was just going straight. I asked her to pull over and she refused. I repeated my request at the next intersection, she refused. When I moved with traffic she turned right onto a street and disappeared.
Thinking only my foot peg was broken I didn't bother to call the police. I went over to my local dealer and started totally up the damage. Besides the obvious broken bracket and foot peg, there were scratches on the outer & inner fairing, lower fairing, dented floor board, the upper fairing vent "wing" was pulled away exposing the copper ferrel partially pulled out, the rubber gasket between the inner & outer fairing was torn.
I ordered a new gasket and bought replacement brackets and foot pegs, went home to swap them out and try to repair the copper ferrel connection for the wing. Two of the three ferrels had to be removed and I put nuts on the back of the bolts. Nothing is visible. But the engine guard feels a little further away than before and the right running light arm seems to be pushed in about an 1/4th of an inch. Going to have the dealer double check those items.
The scratches buffed out well enough that they are not visible until you look real hard.
I did call the police that night to report the accident and was told I had up to 7 days. When I tried the next day the investigator wouldn't take the report because I had repaired the visible damage and he didn't understand the rest. His comment was "Where is the damage on the other side of the bike? If you were sideswiped on this side you would have damage from dropping it on the other side." I asked him if he rode, which he did not. So my reply was, then you won't understand, it's called technique and control.
I was extremely lucky that I stayed upright and was not personally injured. I spoke to the insurance adjuster today, my claim was approved and I will have the rest of the damage fixed very soon. I'm keeping the minor scratches as character.
Glad you are ok Larry, gotta watch the cagers, they really don't care, what's even more surprising is she didn't have a clue as to what she did, bet when she seen the scratch and gouge marks down the side of her car she was fit to be tied!!!...LOL
Too bad you didn't get a license #
I think if my highway peg was caught up in a wheel wall my right arm would be resting on the minivans mirror.
How the he!! did she not know?
Glad your ok, and the bike is fixable.

The Best of Harley-Davidson for Lifelong Riders
I have a service contract in Las Vegas 4 days a month and last month I decided I'd ride the bike. The trip to and from was fun, but 4 days in Las Vegas traffic with drunks, druggies, pissed of gamblers and millions of **** heads that essentially don't give a flock about you or anyone else, put a dark cloud over that trip. Won't be doing that again...
VERY GLAD YOU ARE SAFE!!!!!!!
