I have a 2016 HD StreetGlide Special, I just bought it in April, for the last 3-4 months I've noticed a wiff of burning oil when I come to a stop (after riding awhile, maybe 20 miles or so). I have checked the bike probably 10 times for leaks and there is absolutely no external leaks. I also noticed when i did my 1k mile service, it was probably 2 its low on oil. i thought maybe it just low from the factory I didn't really notice the smell before my 1k miles service (not that I recall anyways). I think it may have started after I changed my pipes. Anyways, Sunday a buddy and I were out for a ride and he said he could see a puff of smoke every time I crack the pipes when coming to a stop. I checked the oil and it is about a qt low, i have about 1800 miles on it since I changed the oil last. To explain: I did the 1k miles service @ about 1100 miles, the oil was very black so I ran it to about 2,300 miles and changed it again. So in all actuality this oil only has about 1800 miles on it and to be down 1 qt is ridiculous.
I took it into the dealership Wednesday and they said they drove about 20 miles and they couldn't see or smell any signs of it burning oil. I got my bike back and they did not drive it at all. I know this because whenI brought my bike in he asked how many miles were on it, i told him 4,108 (4,110 at most), because I remember seeing 4,108 but wasn't sure if it was when I left my house or got to the dealer. Regardless when I picked it up there was 4,109 miles on it - which tells me they replaced the gas cap and that was all.
Your dealer sucks! You probably have a valve guide seal problem. My bike is in for the exact same problem. Before they can pull the motor they are doing a leak down test just to confirm it is not a ring problem (it has good compression on both cylinders) once that is confirmed out comes the motor and they will tear it down to confirm it is the VGS. Take a look at your plugs. I'm sure one or possibly both are oil fouled. Hope you have a warranty.
Same smell and use of oil here, but on a '16 FLHXSE, bought in April, now 6200 mls. Shows low oil every once in a while, with the occasional wiff.
Dealer said it's normal, but I don't believe that. We'll see...
Switched from synthetic to conventional did not help much. I will switch back soon, just to prove a point.
My '14 FLHXS did not use any oil at all in between intervals.
Thank you.

Make sure its not pulling it thru the intake, the cylinder head blow by vents into the intake or throttle body. This may be why your smelling burning oil. THere are a number of different reasons why this would be excessively blowing by and it could indeed be a ring issue. Or excess crank case pressure. pull your air filter and see if its soaked with oil/blow by vapor. Good luck !
Well, I emailed the dealer I bought it from (bike town Harley in youngstown Ohio). The responded and said it could be normal. Harley specifies a maximum of 1qt per 900 miles. so if it's not more than that it is probably normal and they said it could just be normal operation, if you ride for a substantial time on the highway for 60-70mph, oil will accumulate in the rocker area and will get sucked into the intake. They told me to check the oil filter and see if it has a substantial oil build up. I will do that tonight and let you all know what I find...

1 quart per 900 miles???? So in a typical 5K oil change cycle you have to add app. 5 1/2 quarts? No way...as an FYI, I have 4K on this oil change cycle and MAYBE my level dropped 2 dots on the stick...sounds like dealer BS to me!

That ( more than a quart per 900 miles) is the parameter that most manufacturers use ( cars included ) in most oil consumption situations. I'm not saying I be happy with that either but that's the way it is.

Really? Wow...I figured with today's newer technology and tighter clearances you'd go at lease 3K before even thinking about adding oil. I remember back in the day 1 quart per thousand miles was pretty much standard for our old Chevy's and Ford's but I didn't think that applied anymore. Gotta say I'd be really ticked if I had to worry about oil every 900 miles...
