So I need to run my portable 02 generator (copd) when i ride. I can use a cigarette lighter plug in and the unit draws 150 watts when charging its battery. Will the bike's electrical systems handle this much load? I believe the alternator on my 2015 FHLTK puts out 650 watts or 54 amps but I have no idea what the bike needs or what is in reserve. Help
Some touring models come with a high output alternator according to the Harley website, looks like the high output one is rated at 54 amps. http://www.harley-davidson.com/store...A&gclsrc=aw.ds
For sure I would change to a high capacity battery and use the cigarette lighter plug while riding at speed, not idling in traffic. If the COPD is OK to plug into a car I would feel safe using it after changing to a good battery.
stock Rushmore stator puts out 50 amps. so I don't think you would really need the additional 4 amps for what they will cost ya.
Correct on the 4amps difference, however the high output gives you a lot higher output at idle. Without the high output, the higher load may start drawing more than the charging system can provide when in idle situations, such as traffic lights, congestion, etc.. That's the reason I upgraded to the high output on my '14 TK.
I'd start with swapping out your headlamp, and all turn and brake lights with LED if they are not already. Each turn/brake lamp will save you about 1 amp, the headlight could save you 5-10 amps of load so that right there will support the COPD unit load.
