Default Drive Belt Deflection Question

Does anyone know if the increments on the drive belt deflection gauge are 1/8" or 1/16"? Service Manual says they are 1/16" but the look like 1/8th to me meaning the manual is wrong...measuring now and will let you know!

O.K., just measured, they're 1/8th of an inch, looks like the manual is wrong although it does say "about" or "approximately" 1/16" so I guess that leaves them an out. Anyway, I'm at about half an inch so I'm in the range!

Well there is a 100% difference between 1/8th and 1/16th of an inch, so this is not a minor, or "within the range" error. It is clearly a print error in the manual, but it appears the error has to do only with the layout of the belt guard gauge. I believe the spec of 3/8" to 9/16" is correct. I convert the 3/8" to 6/16" so the range is a little more digestible, at between 6/16" and 9/16"

I still use the belt guard gauge, understanding that the belt deflection must fall within the 3/16" range. And understanding that each deflection mark is 2/16" from each other one, not 1/16"

Each 'edge' is spaced at 1/16". Each groove is 1/16" wide. Gotta account for the 1/16" between the grooves and the groove width itself.

I did not know checking a belt was this involved. No wonder they charge $300 for 1000 mile service.

Not that involved, biggest PIA is emptying out the tourpak and saddlebags before you measure. Just that the Service Manual says the increments are 1/16" and if you measure them they're 1/8". I made a note in the manual for the next time...and around here it's closer to $500 for a service.
