I have purchased a 2014 Ultra Classic and need some recommendation on tires. I don't like running the cheap stuff on any of my bikes. This is the first large cruiser/touring bike I have owned so I am in need of some help. thanks Guys& Gals.
I actually think the Dunlop tires from the factory are pretty good. However, I'm on my second set on my Limited and I went with Michelin Commander II's. They were actually cheaper but supposedly are a long lasting tire. We shall see. So far, no complaints with the tires in dry or wet weather.
I run thru tires like it was going out of style logging 32K miles a year for years. So I say unless u have special needs for SOFTER tires or such, STICK WITH THE RECOMMENDED.
Keeping the proper inflation, you should do really well logging LOTs of miles and not having issues.
I'll never buy OEM for my FLHTK again, way over priced IMHO. You get the SAME quality tire from Dunlop American Elite without the Harley logo on the sidewall. Same compound and construction of the OEM only a different tread pattern which rides better in my opinion because it's less likely to track going over certain road conditions.
Michelin Commander II is another very good tire. Both of the aforementioned tires give the same multicompound construction as the OEM meaning they'll last just as long.
BTW if you got tire and wheel coverage with your bike, the brand of tire you use doesn't matter, it's all covered.
I continually read great reviews about AE's. I gotta say I'm happy as can be with my Dunlop E3 radials too. There's no 250 AE available for my ride.
Its a puzzling but true fact that under some models of HD at least, OEM Dunlops have oddly inferior characteristics compared to aftermarket Dunlop lines. The majority of Breakout owners, myself included, can't ditch their "millstone" OEM tires fast enough yet find complete satisfaction over something like the E3's. Whatever the heck is going on its not to the credit of HD nor Dunlop for certain. Dunlop do make great tires. You just don't find em on new HD's.
1 HDIC - actually, it is no secret - started getting this sort of miles with my 2011. Have to tell you that I, and the dealer were surprised.
Now, with my 2014, I am getting the same - and others here are reporting the same thing. My secret - ride the bike 2up with my wife, just take her easy (the bike I mean) and have tons of fun.
