The one thing I never liked about Harley motors was all the chatter from the top end. My Pan was the worst. Sounded like a couple of skeletons f###### in a tin can. Back then I ran my exhaust so loud it covered most of the noise but not anymore. I run Big Louie's on my RG with 2"baffles and can hear the engine working. I started using Lucas top end lubricant and injector cleaner and was amazed how much more quiet the valve train is. Worth the money just for that benefit. If it keeps the fuel system clean that's bonus.
My 16 Ultra Classic is very quiet. Even with stock mufflers, I rarely get any clatter from the top end. Sometimes, when it is good and hot, I'll hear a bit of commotion from what seems like the cam assy on the right side. Or upon a cold start, I'll get one second of what sounds like a lifter pumping up. Other than this, my motor is amazingly quiet at 30k miles.
I've had liquid cooled bikes that made more clatter than this 103. A 92 Kawasaki Concours? Even my late 07 Yamaha Venture with dual overhead cams made more clatter than this.
Have a look around my website, helped many many folks with the same issue
