It happens. Mine dropped but it was replaced by HD under recall, and they "fixed" the problem. I stuck with the dzus pins, and have had no further problems.
Are these a good idea?
Sure, why not? There are many other "systems" to address this. Many, many threads on the subject.
I went with the new HD screw ins that they started using on the 2017. They are a little pricey at $45.00 but excellent quality. They look and work GREAT. Plus I figured the service techs would know what they are when in for service.
Bought a pair for my brother also for his 15 Limited as a birthday present.
Better safe than sorry. There are a lot of reports online that bags have fallen off with the old style clips and no side rails on the bikes any longer.
I just went to Lowes and bought the same **** in black and matching spring nuts. The bolt was longer than I liked, so I marked it and cut if off. Done, for under $10.
Yes. My right bag fell off. I bought my 2014 Road King used in spring 2016, and according to the service record the warranty work had been done. I called HD corporate and they gave me a number, replaced the bag for no cost. It took about 6 weeks to get the bag in, so I rode around with a scratched bag.

I bought the parts at Lowe's and put one **** at the front location in each bag, left the rear with the OEM fasteners.
The ones on my '17 are bullet proof, but damn they stick out and everything I put in the bags hang up on them. The removable travel bags are really bad for catching on them. On the bright side, they make for great hangers.
Yeah,I hate those ***** on My 17.They catch everything that I put in the bag.I had a 14,12 and 08 with a combined 87,000 miles and never lost a bag. The 14's felt weird when You would turn them.Hard to get a solid click when tight. After the recall, they made a solid click when turned.
EXTREMELY Rare to have a saddlebag fall off but because of forums it does make us think twice about the possibility so nothing wrong for peace of mind replacing the pins.
I would question if the aftermarket items are better though, if there was an issue with them no one would ever find out because so little produced.
If i did anything I would do what Cosmic above did, get the 2017 Harley Version at almost the same price as aftermarket. You know the Harley version is on 10s of thousands of bikes and will be recalled if an issue, not so with aftermarket. I will admit, the new ones stick out quite a bit!
$40 is nothing to spend on a 20 thousand plus dollar bike to do it the OEM way.
