When you are doing the mapping there is an option for round trip in most programs.

In my experience it's always better to start a route furth down the road than you anticipate in case you want to meet up with people, gas up or whatever and let the bike lead you in to the first point and then make the last your true destination. Gives a little more flexibility to the route without having to override waypoints.

My point is, you can create routes in HD Ride Planner (or any other mapping software), and have your GPS unit (HD Nav, Garmin, TomTom, etc.) follow that route exactly.

The key is learning how to use the tools you are using.

Note: I have my GPS unit set on fastest, and the only avoidance I have is unpaved roads.
That makes it easy to plan routes using web based mapping, and then use strategic waypoints along the way to ensure your GPS unit follows that route.
I have learned that very thing over the years and never had an issue with the route not coming into the garmin or BOOM system and not follow what I have verified to be correct data. The settings on the GPS have to match the settings in the software.

You plan your routes and as your dragging the computer is searching fasted route between two points. If it goes where you don't want it forces you to place another point.

I will say the ride planner can from time to time export some incorrect data. That is why I verified everything in Tyre before loading it to the USB stick. I had it put me on the other side of a hotel. If I would have not verified it and corrected it I would have seen the hotel while getting back on the interstate.

All of this discussion is interesting & I agree with many points that have been made. Because the H-D Ride Planner is cumbersome & generally requires verification using an intermediary program, I quit using it some time ago.

I do all my route planning using Route Converter. I set my Nav to shortest route calculation & use enough waypoints to assure the roads selected between waypoints are the shortest route available. I also make sure to place my waypoints either before or after intersections, but never at the intersection. I also zoom in as close as possible in Route Converter to assure the waypoints on the roads, not off to the side, which can cause the Nav to add turns trying to travel through that errant waypoint. Route Converter uses the Google Maps db & can be set to satellite view to verify roads are paved. I also set avoidance for gravel roads.

Using Route Converter, it is easy to build multiple routes into a single GPX file. I do this when my day's travel route requires more than 50 or so waypoints. Route converter allows each route its' own name & the GPX file to have its' own name as well. When importing this GPX data, I select the ALL option to load all routes in the GPX file, then select & run each separate route within the GPX file with its' unique name.

I have previously posted information regarding the use of Route Converter & have found no issues using it with H-D 6.5GT system.

ursman - you made this comment:
When I export my gpx from the HD site and try to import to the Honda site, only the 1st couple of way points show up.....unsure why but i've tried it several times without success.

I believe I have the answer. The reason you are not getting all of the waypoints when you export the gpx file from Harley and import into Honda is because, you are only "loading" the first route on your flash drive from Harley.

Look at your map - you actually have 8 different routes (if I counted them correctly). Harley records them separately.

To better understand what I am saying, go back to this same Harley Ride Planner trip. On the planer, please right click on the locations (grey boxes) and change them to locations (for all except the start and finish points).

When you do this, you now have just one continuous route.

Now, save that route and import that file into Honda. I think you will find all of your waypoints listed now.
