Default CB Module not covered

OK folks, need some advise on how to handle an issue with warranty on a defective CB unit.

I bought a 2015 Ultra Classic two years ago this month. I put in a CB on the bike some time after the purchase...maybe about 3 months later.

I took the bike in today because the CB had static on the radio (music) and I couldn't hear the radio if the CB was on.

Diagnosis by the shop was that the CB module was defective. Got a call from the Service Dept and was told they would have to order a new module and install it.
Because I did not have it installed at time of purchase, the warranty, of ONLY 60 days, would not cover it. Warranty would only be covered if I had installed it at time of purchase.

So it appears that add-on items are not covered AFTER time of purchase. Those items DO NOT follow the normal 2 year factory warranty from purchase date.

The bill for fixing it will be $204, new module and labor.

I want to speak with Harley Customer Service about this. Any suggestions on how to handle the discussion?

This is a loop hole in warranty coverage that wants to force you to buy ALL accessories at TIME OF PURCHASE to have them covered under the original Factory warranty. I feel this is not honorable.

I post this because I wonder how many of you are aware of this deplorable policy.

sorry and not to be heartless but i believe those are the rules of the warranty. dealer i work with was clear about this and used it as a sales pitch to sell accessories right away.

Just looked it up, looks like the CB Module is covered under warranty for 1 year-

Look under the "Details" tab...

I thought parts like this have a one year warranty, but they can always blame it on corrosion. Which is not covered. The $204 is a great price installed. The module itself is $324.95! https://www.harley-davidson.com/shop...cation-systems

Wish I could get it for that........John

I know it sucks, but like mazz indicated...this isn't surprising.

I am a bit surprised that the CB warranty was only 60 days. I thought 1 year was pretty much their standard warranty, even on electrical parts. But it sounds like you would be over that anyway.

You might try looking into an extended warranty. Although I kind of doubt they would cover something that was already identified as defective.

Edit: Obviously my response was late to the party.

I feel your pain, but I'm not understanding what you don't get about the CB warranty. Why would you expect a CB that you installed 3 months after purchasing the bike would fall under the bike's warranty?

Ask them what the warranty period is on a CB module. See what they say and go from there.

For as long as I can remember, items that get the extended coverage need to be on your SWR (sales warranty record). If it's not, you get the basic coverage for the part.

The linked discussion is excellent:

I am sort of lost on this post. Looking up the cb unit (as offered by IUOE ROB), the warranty for the unit is 1 year.

Add to that - the interesting part is the cb is $324. So now you have a dealer replacing the unit plus putting it in for $204. Something just does not adds up for me. Maybe I am reading this wrong

Yes my dealer told me very clearly that anything I purchased and that they installed within 60 days of the new bike purchase would be covered under the full 2 year new bike warranty. Outside of that NOT.

I really don't think you will get help on this one. But I have been wrong once before. Good Luck
