Like the title says, anyone using the Garmin 396? Yes, my bike has built in GPS, but our last two trips the BOOM! gps kept deviating from the Ride Planner routes I had made to the point I quit using it, used my phone and went from there.
I had waypoints and destinations in place and in Ride Planner it still shows my planned route...but the gps was already altering the route before I even got out of town...on the preplanned route.
So, looking at a standalone unit that we can also use in the wife’s car...so for both uses, I figured the Zumo model simply because of the weather protection.
I'm pretty sure the name "Zumo" adds a couple of hundred dollars to the price tag. On my 06 Ultra I used a Loran unit, non waterproof. If I was concerned about weather I'd just put a ZipLoc or small plastic bag over it and use a small zip type tie to secure it. Worked for me...I'm also looking for a Garmin unit for the bike and for the Corvette (another user unfriendly device), a couple of hundred dollars gets you a near top-of-the-line Garmin unit with lifetime traffic and map updates.
I bought and used it on a trip from Florida to Pennsylvania a couple of weeks ago. It is marvelous! The Adventure riding feature worked perfectly. I linked it to my Iphone and received live traffic, weather, radar, and traffic cams. This thing worked so well that my Cheap-*** riding buddy got one (this is no small event). Warning! if you move all the sliders for the adventure mode to the left, you had better be riding something with knobby tires. I settled with the sliders in the mid position and was treated to one beautiful road after another. Hope this helps.

I did the same thing with our 10 year old Nuvi and I’d consider using it again, but it doesn’t hold a charge and is very finicky about when and if it will charge at all. I also considered the Garmin DriveSmart 61 LMT-S ($200 vs the $400 for the Zumo) but don’t like how there isn’t a very secure way to mount it to the bike unless I just use my RAM X Grip. I guess I like the solid mount the Zumo has.

Funny, I was looking online last night at the DriveSmart 61, does look like a good unit. I used to leave the Loran unit on the bike, unless I was actually leaving the bike overnight or for a long time I never took it off and no one ever bothered with it...but then again IT WAS a Loran, not a Garmin, LOL! And on the Garmin website it looks like they're selling it at the same $200 as other sites are selling it for, I'd rather buy from the manufacturer if possible. And it does have A LOT of cool features...some negative reviews but I guess that's to be expected. Good luck in your quest...
My suggestion - but the Garmin ZUMO 595 instead. If you call Garmin and let them know you are replacing an older unit - they will sell the 595 for $489.
I just got 1 for my son and also a buddy of mine got one.
Hi guys, for those of you that have installed the Garmin 396LMT-S, how long is the power cable? Long enough to run from the battery to the bars on a touring bike? Does it come with ring terminals for the battery or did you have to solder it? I can't seem to find any info on the power cables anywhere. Thanks in advance!
Do you have a handlebar mount mount recommendation that will accommodate a Zumo 396 LMT-S with the following dimensions?
Width 4.9 in
Depth 1 in
Height 3.4 in
