Default GPS Recommendation ?

Recently got back from 9 days of biking around Tuscanny and Umbria in Italy; need a GPS before I do something like that again; paved ox-cart trails are neat riding but they defy North American style navigation...I'm looking at maybe a Garmin Zumo 450 (not interested in blue tooth talking; had my cell shut off for 2 weeks and it was a vacation in itself) but I can't tell from reading on the net if it or any other motorcyle suitable units have what we used to call "MOB" or man overboard, where you could hit the button and it would track a path from there so you could turn around and go back to the same spot.....any comments?

Haven't heard of the "MOB", however you can save any location at anytime, so you could use that as the "MOB" on the Zumo. I've got a 450 and a 550.

With the Zumo you can view the route you took so technically you can save it as a "route" then just backtrack

I got a Lowrance XOG. It's for boating , therefore it's water proof and vibration does not effect it.

With all the features of units costing $600.00 and more this one was only $268.00.

I got it in the fishing tackle dept. of Wal-Mart. Bass Po Shops sell it for a little less.

The Garmin Zumo 450 would be a very good choice in a GPS. I have the Garmin Zumo 550. I do not use the Bluetooth for my phone. But one nice feature is having earplugs hooked up to the zumo if you're running a route it will tell you in voice where your next turn is, this is a safety feature to me, especially if I am enjoying the view and not really paying attention to the GPS. Also on the 550 you can have mp3 playing if you like, and when it comes to a turn our location you have programmed it will stop playing the mp3 and let you know where your turn or stop is.

The Lowrance XOG does all of that at a lot lower price and Lowrance helped pioneer the GPS technology for civilian use.

I have a Tom Tom that I paid about $150 for. It works great. I used it on my east coast trip this summer. The only thing I didn't like was a short battery life. I am going to get an adapter (cig. lighter thingy) so I dont have to worry about battery life anymore.

I haven't purchased one for my bike yet, however I have one that I use in my truck and my wife's car. I like the Garmin interface much better than the Tom Tom interface. Not sure how they compare on MC models.

I had not thought of that option -- great idea! How did you mount the unit?

I run a Garmin 478 Marine Charteplotter that has the MOB feature. But I think that feature works only in marine mode and only returns you via a direct path to the spot marked as MOB.

Hope that helps!
