Default Black Upgrades

Looking to go to a Stage II on my 2014 Amber Whiskey FLHX. I've been looking at full ceramic black headers/slip-ons and the ceramic black SE Heavy Breather Elite.... Anyone have experience with putting black accessories on an otherwise chrome powertrain/hardware bike? Is it going to look too obtrusive? Do I just stick with chrome everything?

It's your bike. Do whatever makes you happy.

Depends on your long term goal. I wish I started with a black exhaust, because I blacked out everything else. If you plan on blacking out your bike, the exhaust is the most expensive part, so good for you. If not, then why? It will always stick out in your mind, and It will always bother you. You can add other black accents to balance it out, but it really leads you down a rabbit hole.

I started with black exhaust but knew I’d eventually blackout the bike. This was before the MoCo did it with the M8 Specials.

In the winter of 2015, I stripped the bike of all silver or chrome parts (except the wheels) and had them powder coated gloss black. The total cost for powder coating (included stripping the finish from the parts) was $320. I had 64 total pieces done. I spent another $200 in gaskets and such to reassemble the bike. Later, I removed the wheels and had them done for $120. I think having the tires removed, remounted, and balanced was around $100. I also took the opportunity to replace the wheels bearings.

As others have said, really depends where you want to end up. If your headed into the blackness, pipes are a great start. If your not going to add more black or contrast cut I’d go chrome, but it’s yours - make yourself happy!

Great job! I too have wanted it blacked out before the 18’s. Where’d you get your wheels done?

I personally like a balance of both. Totally up to you. I like more chrome with black accents but whatever looks best to you.

I like a combination of black and chrome.

Maybe just black out the heat shields, chrome mufflers with the black end caps would look sharp, IMO.
