Default Quick Disconnect Slop

Hi all,

Hope everyone is doing okay in these crazy times. Well, I'm running out of things to do on the bike, so now I'm down to the little things that are annoying. When I bought the bike, it had the quick disconnect for the tour pak. Which is okay, I don't intend to take it off, but now the back slot where the bottom attachment is has a little play in it and when I go over a bumpy road, I can hear it. Anyone else have that problem? What was your solution? I guess I could try and put a piece of rubber around the bolt attachment to take up the slack. No, I don't want to spend a lot of money and get the non detachable support. Any ideas?

Duff

The spools are elliptical, they can be rotated to tighten things up.

That is what I did to mine, but you can only rotate them so many times and then the spools are worn completely, then you can change the spools or luck out like me and a guy I worked with traded me this solid mount for my detachable stuff, that was nice, we were both happy.

A few wraps of black electrical tape should be nearly invisible when the backrest is installed?
I don’t know, just throwing that out there. Easy to remove if you don’t like it. I did that on an older Dyna I had with a removable backrest that wiggled with those type of latches.

As others have said, you can rotate the cams and tighten to take up the slack. But I found that the rattle came back after a few hundred miles.

That's why I went back to the non-detachable mount. I understands you don't want to spend money. But if this gets annoying enough, you might advertise for a trade like BeemerTrash did. I found that I can remove the tourpack almost as fast with the stock mount as it with the "quick disconnect".

On a somewhat related note...you should check to make sure that the previous owner did something to make sure the wires/connectors are not rubbing holes in the paint on your back fender.

See if you have this grommet on the other side. Mine was broken. After I replaced it, the slop went away.

Yeah, the grommet is there. I think I'm just going to do the electrical tape fix. Thank you all for your suggestions.

If the rear spools are worn, and the fronts are rarely used, you could try swapping the fronts to the rear.

+1. This works well and will buy you some time until you ultimately need to replace them all. The rears get chewed up fast because of the sharp edges and whatnot of the lock/clamp/bracket.

Don't waste your time with electrical tape. Tried it myself once and it just ends up a mess after a week or so in the heat. I did move to heat shrink and that lasted maybe a month before the sharp edges cut right though it...

Right on. I'll try the swap method and see if that works.

Thanks everyone.
