I used to hear people say that we have to wait until 'this' happens or 'that' light goes off before we start our bikes. On my older bikes I could hear the fuel pump prime and often waited to start until the pump shut off after a couple of seconds, but if I was in a hurry I'd just turn the switch and hit the starter.
On the '14 I really can't hear the pump like on the older bikes, perhaps it's too many years of loud pipes or perhaps the pumps are different, who knows. I still wait a second or two out of habit usually but I was riding with a guy yesterday who saw me start the bike right after turning the switch on and he just about had a meltdown. He said I have to wait until the shield logo on the screen goes off and I hit 'Accept' before starting!!!
I didn't really know how to respond so I just said "OK" and went on.
His melt down was because he fell for BS and he didn't want to hear it.
See some people say piggy back tuners with 20 cent circuits are like that however.
Key on and start. My 04 does it. Some vehicles don't even have a fuel pump timer on to hit up full pressure. My Toyota doesn't. It uses two relays. One which is in crank. The second receives a ground from ECM only after motor is running.
Harley's have one relay and the timer. There is no run of fuel pump during crank other then the 2 second timer. The one relay on fuel pump gets it's ground from ECM after gets enough hits from CPS.. About 3/4 turn of motor.
The alarm or signal circuit kills the fuel pump if bike banks over too far. (Crash). On/off of key resets that.
Read a few paragraphs in your owners manual on starting.

Was this the same guy who had a melt down over flashing tail lights? Maybe he got his screen inspector endorsement along with his light inspection certificate.
Ignition on hit start. you don't have to wait for anything. If it makes you feel good wait for gauges to sweep. It will do any checks it needs to started or not.
That shield has nothing to do with it. I saw a You Tube vid where the dude kept turning the ignition on and off and each time he waited for the shield to go off. WOW!
On my '15 I wait for the check engine light to go off. Supposedly to give the computer a chance to inventory the sensors. I didn't wait one time and it threw a code which didn't come back on after I restarted and waited the few seconds. It's just a few seconds sooooo.....
