Default 2014 Limited overheating issue

I had a new upgraded water pump installed recently and everything fine. Then I started getting the hot engine icon coming on for about 15-30 seconds inconsistently. The fuse is good. I do the test with the ignition on and throttle up over half way and the fans come on but cannot detect pump being on. Could this be a bad temp sensor? Ant ideas appreciated!

Did you check for codes? You should be able to feel the pump running by touching it.

I don't know how to read codes. Do I need a code reader? From what I've heard, the pump should run when the fans are on. Mine is not. Anyone know if the replacement pumps have a warranty? I had mine replaced in the spring so maybe 5K miles on it at most. I'm hoping it's the temp sensor, but wouldn't the pump come on when doing the test with the throttle?

Here is how to read the codes through the Mileage/Trip meter.

The following procedure will instruct in retrieving and clearing ECM Diagnostic Trouble Codes and TSM/TSSM codes through the Harley guage cluster as well as a list of codes on 2014 and up.

1- Turn Ignition switch to OFF & Run/Stop switch is to Run.

2- Push odometer reset button in & hold.

3- Turnignition switch to Ignition and release the odometer reset button. Background lighting should illuminate, speedometer needle should sweep its full range and indicator lamps (battery, security, low fuel, check engine and cruise) should illuminate. The word "diag" should then appear.

4 - Push the odometer resetbutton once and you will see the selection menu "PSSPt" with the first P flashing.

5 - Each letter represents an area of the diagnostics module. The module that is flashing is the one you are going to check. To move from one letter (module) to the next, you push the odometer resetbutton one time. (from P to S to SP to t and back to P, etc.)
P = ECM/ICM(Electronic Control Module)[EFI] /Ignition Control Module[Carbureted])
S = TSM/TSSM (Turn Signal/ Security Module)
SP = speedometer
T = tachometer

6 - To get the DTC within an area of diagnostics, push and hold the odometer resetbutton in for 5 seconds and release. If there are any DTC's the code will be displayed or the word "none" will appear if there are no DTC's. Push the odometer resetbutton again to view additional codes if they exist.

7 - Record the codes.

8 - If DTC's are not to be cleared, Press and release the odometer reset button. Part number of module will be displayed.
NOTE: To determine if a code is current or historic, clear the displayed code by pushing in and holding the odometer reset button ( longer than 5 seconds) until 'clear' comes up. Release the odometer reset button. Turn OFF the ignition switch. Run your bike and shut it down then recheck the DTC's again by repeating steps 1 to 9. If the code is current it will reappear.

9 - Press and release the odometer reset button to continue to the next module.

10 - Turn Ignition switch to OFF.

On models not equipped with a tachometer "No Rsp" will appear when the tachometer identifier is selected.

"No Rsp" (no response) will also appear if the run/off switch is in the off position when doing this procedure.

--------------------------

HFSM = Hands Free Security Module
TSM = Turn signalmodule

DTC’s are designated by a P,C,B or U
P codes indicate issues monitored by ECM
C codes indicate an issue with ABS
B codes are set by Radio, Instruments and BCM
U codes indicate a communication problems with the modules

Pry the right lower cover off, remove coolant tank cap. Turn ignition on, don't start the bike. Hold throttle more than halfway open to start fans and pump (like you have done before). You'll be able to see the coolant moving if the pump is running. If the pump isn't running, remove the water pump cover and check the plugs (2) to make sure they are tight and corrosion free. There is a plug on the pump and a pigtail plug a few inches up the same wires.

Many thanks for the great ideas and info. I'll check for codes later, but for now I can say when I test the fans and pump, the fans come on but no detectable activity from the pump. From what I've heard, you bleed the system by running the pump. I'm still in belief that my new pump is shot after only 6000 miles. I will put a new thermostat in first just to rule that out, it's easier and it's cheaper. I will check the connections to the pump today but it all appears okay. I think Harley must have a system to keep things working until the extended warranty expires. Definitely high tech!

I know you said "upgraded" but just in case you find you're still running the same water pump style that came with the bike which is known to fail, be aware that there is a newer redesigned replacement pump that does not have a thermostat.
Same pump they used on the 2017s+.

PN: 26800107 - $296.72 on surdyke.

If you're already running this pump, maybe the info above and attached can help you in troubleshooting and verifying your installation. Good luck!

I had the new style pump installed 6K miles ago. I'm hoping it's something else besides the pump. My old one lasted 25K miles, so if it is the pump it only lasted a quarter as long. Not an improvement! Not to bitch excessively, but I wonder if sales of motorcycles might improve if the manufacturers stood behind their product more. This is my 7th Harley and it seems each one is less reliable. Okay, no more bitching!

Easy way to verify if the pump is working is to run the fan test right after a good ride that get the bike up to operating temps. If the air blowing out of the lowers is warm, the pump is moving the coolant. If the air is ambient temp or feels cool...dead pump.
