You still may want to set up the heads with breathers and just plug the bolts. That way if it doesn't work out, you wont have to tear back into it to add the breather valves....
The new HD cover does not fit onto the earlier transmission, bolt patterns are different. You can however run a line from a modified original cover to the air cleaner but the new HD piece has an oil separator built into it, so you need to add something in the line to prevent the oil fumes getting up to the air filter. A PCV valve or separator can be added to solve that. One needs to remember that the heads are connected to the camchest area via the pushrod tubes. The vent through the modified transmission cover is also connected into the camchest area via a passageway. If you do not handle separating the oil out of the air prior to it entering the air filter you haven't solved anything. As for the S&S drainback valve, its not going to hurt anything and not going to solve anything as long as the OE part isn't broken. So the question has to be how many are breaking, and I haven't heard of any before this thread.
The trans cover vent on the new engine is OEM, not some expensive aftermarket billet gizmo to get money out of someone`s wallet.
The "expensive aftermarket billet gizmo to get money out of someone`s wallet" retains the trans vent and adds a vent that bleeds off excessive crankcase pressure. It's was so effective on my street glide that I also put one on my Heritage.

funny..
I've got one of these fancy new covers on my softail. fit like a glove. all they do is eliminate the two center bolts. even on the 2024's the threaded holes are still there. They just dont use them.
i also have my head breathers plugged with solid bolts. no more oil in the intake.
