Default M8 Oil Control Valve Problems? Really?

So I often get advertisements for everything HD from everywhere but this one baffled me because I never heard of such a problem in any M8 yet and this particular product advertisement makes the claim that the “Stock Oil Control Valve” (that retains the check ball) is made of formed steel that can fatigue, break and send steel fragments through the oiling system causing severe damage and I’m like wait, what?

So is this a case of S&S pimping a nonexistent problem to market an AM replacement part or is this a real thing? Anybody even heard of this chit? And wtf would it take for a simple ball check valve to actually fail?

Buddies failed on a ride, spitting earl everywhere. Nothing really we could do, except decide he could make it back down the hill, he split and high tailed it home.

Not sure if he went with OE. I will ask. But that’s only one I personally heard of but no metal and crap in earl.

I saw that video recently, and haven’t once heard about that kind of failure on here, but I’m not an HD sage.

Based on my very unscientific assessment, it seems like S&S has a solution looking for a problem.

Would I want that if I had it apart for a build? Yes. Would I take it apart otherwise? No.

According to S&S website: "The factory oil control valve on all oil cooled M8 engines regulates the amount of oil flowing to the oil cooler/heads. The stock assembly includes a check ball retainer that is formed steel. Over time, this retainer can fatigue and break, causing chips to flow through the oil system, back into the tank and can causing significant damage along the way. The S&S oil control valve is constructed of 6061 billet aluminum and the check ball retainer is machined from high strength steel, for long-lasting durability. Don't risk the integrity of your performance engine!"

Looks like an easy bolt-on part during an oil change.

What prompted you to change out the OEM part for the S&S part? An oil leak?

I was in the cam chest to update the oil pump and checked it because of the S&S ad on the oil control valve

I’ll speculate that S&S is addressing a perceived weakness here, not a known flaw or failure.

I don’t agree with them that a stamped steel housing is an inherent failure point. I don’t agree with them that a machined aluminum housing would be an upgrade. I rather doubt either would be problematic in this application.
