Navigation on the GTS
I use Basecamp to make routes. Last week I went on a three-day trip. I made two routes.
The first day was just 300 miles and maybe had 5 waypoints. The second trip was 1600 miles and had 23 waypoints. When I chose the second trip it would Fail to load, and Options was the only hot button
When I got home, I tried loading a few other routes and ran into the same problem. Then I found if I changed Alternate routes from Off to either Same or Different the routes would load.
Would anyone know why this is happening? In basecamp the avoidances are set for unpaved road, narrow path and climbing paths.

And on top of that I'm not sure what Alt Route same and different means..............................

Zoom in and inspect each waypoint to make sure it's on a road segment, not to the side in some building or on a beach, not in an intersection, and if on a divided highway on the right side (direction).
Make sure there is a start and end destination (forget off-hand what they call it).
Save it to the Ride Planner cloud.
Load up the H-D app on your phone, scroll to the ride and make sure it's there.
With the phone on the USB tether or connected by bluetooth, locate it on the GTS head unit.
Ride it.
If you miss a waypoint, it's misplaced, there's a construction detour around it, or you simply decide not to ride through it it's important to manually skip it: press the "stop" icon on the bottom right portion of the nav screen, then select the option to skip it. If you don't you'll get continuously routed back to it since the nav system always wants to take you to the next waypoint. This is the case even if you find your own way to a waypoint further down, it won't recognize this and will keep wanting to take you back to the next one. It's dumb, but it is what it is and not a huge deal if you're aware of it. This is also why it's so important to make sure you can actually pass through the waypoints!
A good way to tell you missed a waypoint is that it starts telling you to turn around or tells you to turn at each intersection, despite you actually following your route. It will show the route forking at an intersection - to form a loop back to the waypoint you missed. If you're confident you're actually on the main route, just manually skip the missed waypoint.
The nav system always navigates to the next waypoint. This means it makes up a route to it on the fly (taking XM traffic into account if you have it), and it can be different from the route that Ride Planner showed, as their algorithms seem to deviate slightly. More waypoints reduces this, but also makes it easier to miss one, so just having a gazillion waypoints (I think the limit is 100) is not a good solution either. With some practice you'll get a feel for how to space and place them effectively.
Don't try having more than one destination. The head unit will only navigate to the first and stop there; I have yet to find any way to make it continue to the next destination. It simply thinks you're done no matter what.
Google maps is fine too, but has its own problems; like if you create a route on a laptop or tablet any route drags are lost when it's sent to your phone. Conversely Google Maps on iPhone doesn't allow route dragging. Traffic information and exit information both require an active connection and a reasonably fast one at that. Can you even load a GPX track on Google Maps? I've never tried and don't know how well that will work.

I've been using the HD Navigation since 2015 and never ran into this hiccup.
I was using Tyre to create routes before, and decided it was time to learn Basecamp. Quite a learning curve but with the help from New England Riders and EZ Moto Tim's tutorials it's a good program.
Just trying to find out what Alt Route has to do with the routes loading.

This! I use Tyre with this method and rarely have issues. When I do, its because I failed to double check the route in HD Ride Planner.
To those who say use Google....its primarily a Point A to Point B GPS getting you there the fastest way possible. I use it when I am not on a trip where I am trying to go an explicit route.
