Default Cooling System Recall

Hey guys...

I'm trying to find out if the cooling system recall reprogrammed the ECU. I did a search on "cooling recall" and "recall" and didn't find anything, so my apology if this has been discussed and I missed it.

I bought my 2014 Limited at the end of August 2013. Traded in a 2013 Limited on it. Yes, I was that impressed. I've not had any cooling system problems, but I'm only at 950 miles. The dealer picked up my bike and did the cooling system recall. I've ridden it twice since then. I'm in Denver, so its still pretty cold outside. Both times I've ridden it, when shut it off in the garage, the fans turned on for 30 seconds. It was 42*F the last time I rode it.

I'm wondering if H-D reprogrammed the cooling system to run for 30 seconds after shutoff to remove some of the heat from the heads and prevent a boiling condition. I know some guys (me included) would force the fans to run after they shut down. I also know that the fans were not running while I was riding the bike two weeks ago and it was 42*F.

Just wondering while I'm waiting for a little warmer weather to put my Fuelmoto 2:1:2 headpipe on it.

Steve

The cooling system "recall" was not a recall. The only recall on the Limiteds, and other '14 models, has been the hydraulic clutch master cylinder. The only thing on the cooling system was the product program campaign to replace the filler neck. To my knowledge, there has been no recall or product program campaign to reprogram the ECM. At least I have not received anything from HD concerning a reprogram.

If your ignition is on, bike not running, and you roll past 50% on the throttle, the fans will turn on.

Not saying that happened, but if you inadvertently twisted the throttle with the bike not running, ign on, fans will run.

Wait... did I just repeat myself?

Yea, there was no RECALL on the cooling system, just changed the filler neck and it had absolutely nothing to do with the ECM. I'm thinkin you turned on the fans with the trottle as mentioned

I do believe they have answered your question about the coolant system. Regarding the fans, I have noticed that when I turn my bike off (parked in the garage), I have noticed the fan running for a few seconds.

I imagine this is always the case - but the fans are so quiet that when I am not in the garage and turn the bike off, I have never heard it.

In the case of my bike if the bike is real hot (subjective I know) the fans seem to stay on for 30 seconds or so when I shut it off.

Didn't know this, great bit of info, thanks! Why do you think they did this, maybe as someone mentioned, to bleed away some of the heat and prevent "boiling" after shutdown? Does anyone do this when they park? And does the ignition have to be in the run position? Thanks again!

I took my bike in for the filler neck a month ago. It's been in the mid 60's this week. I've ridden 400 miles this week lowest temp 25 highest temp 68. Fans aren't coming on. My fans activated last year above 80 degrees.

Bought my Limited at end of August. My fans came on only twice by itself when I got home. It was hot out. This was before I knew about shutting the bike off, turn ign. on twist the throttle to 50%, as I learned from this forum. I've had them come on while in traffic. I believe the ecm is programmed to bring on the fans at a certain temperature. It never happened again, but the temperatures here in New Jersey dropped. I'm getting the V&H fuelpak 3 from Eastern Performance today and will be doing stage 1 soon. With the FP3 maybe I can figure out what the cylinder head temperature is to bring on the fans?

My experience with other liquid cooled bikes, the fan has a run delay based on the temperature of the coolant that is preset.
