I've started logging some miles on my 2014 ultra classic and really like almost everything about the new bike. However, the windshield is driving me crazy. I'm 5'11" and it seems like the windshield is a crappy height for me. When I'm riding, especially at night, it seems like I'm always choosing between looking through the windshield for sand on the road or looking over the windshield to see what's out in front of me. Does anyone have any recommendations on replacement windshield? I'm looking for input for sizes and styles of windshields. Thank you.
There are several recurve type shields that allow you to go shorter without losing effectiveness. I have the LRS Ultra Shield and love it. Klockwerks, HD Windsplitter, Fast Aire are some of the others.
I use to have a 2006 streetglide with the stock 4" windshield and my 2006 boss hoss never had a windshield so I guess that's why it seems awkward. I did look at the 7" hd wind splitter but haven't tried it yet. I was also looking at just getting a streetglide windshield for the summer riding.
I personally don't see how someone looks through the stock shield, I'm not that tall and see way over it. I bought a 10" LRS (same height as stock) in DARK tint, and see way over it. I bought an 8" LRS in dark to see what it looks like, and it's dead sexy and still offers great wind protection.
I made the mistake of buying a 7 " wind splitter befiore trying it. It looks sharp but is useless at any speed over 50. It feels like my sun glasses are getting wiggled off my head. There is also wind getting behind my glasses that makes it hard to see. My last bike didn't even have a windshield and I didn't have any troubles like this. Hd dealer won't take it back even though it's only two days old. They said I should have tried it first.
2014 SGS. I bought a 10" WindSplitter from my dealer and it's great. I'm 5'11" and i see over with room to spare. I sometimes ride with a Sundowner seat, and even though it raises me up a bit more, the 10" still works great. However, the biggest reduction in the buffeting that remained occurred when I installed the Harley fork deflectors last week.
I also have a couple of Freedom Shields... 7" dark tint (LOVE this one... works just as well as the 10" Windsplitter and looks way better) and a 12" clear, which it turns out is just a bit too tall. However, behind this shield the pocket of still air is remarkable.
Lots of choices out there... this is a great place to learn about them.
