Hi guys. Put a new dark customs derby cover on today. Bike was cold cold here in Ohio. When I got it open, I noticed the oil was waaaaay down there, just barely visible. I remember on my others, it was close to running out or at the bottom of the clutch? Should I add some? Bike only got less than 200 on it, won't really ride til spring. Owners manual says check with warm engine, but that's a big diff to make up? Thanx!
On my 2011 FB the primary oil level was close to the bottom of the opening, as was the bottom of the clutch. On my 2018 Heritage the bottom of the clutch and proper oil level is well below the opening. It threw me off a bit the first time I opened it because the picture in the 2018 manual looks like the old configuration on my 2011 bike. At first I thought it was under filled because it appeared to be much lower than it was on my FB.

I also overfilled my primary thinking it was not at the correct level. Go by the recommended ounces per the manual. Will look low.
It is my understanding that the bike needs to be straight up or at least leaning to the right , away from the stand , If opened on the stand oil will run out , on Touring models anyway.

Can't speak for all softails but on my Heritage you can remove the cover with it leaning on the stand and oil will not come out but you have to have it upright in order to properly fill/check the level.
