Default Front End Disassembly

18 Fat Boy- I'd like to take the front end a part to have it powder coated. Shocks, trees etc etc... How hard of a job it that?

Also- a friend of mine has a Street Glide and he found a company that does exchanges. Basically you order a part coated how you want, they send it to you, you ship back the part you took off your bike and they refund a large portion of the full purchase price back once they get it. Anyone know of a company that does this for Fat Boys? Thanks.

Intimidating if you've never done it, but not difficult. Wheel is off with 4 bolts. 2 on one brake caliper for clearance, one pinch at the fork lower and one axle. Remove other caliper and hang them both from the frame with some wire or rope/string. Fender is 4 bolts. Not sure if you can get to the pinch bolts on the triples with the nacelle, so it may need to come off, or not. Once you can access, 4 bolts to loosen the trees and slip out the fork tubes.

Fork opens with the cap bolt (Carefully), remove spring and preload spacer, then bang out the bottom bolts with an impact gun (very helpful, can be difficult w/o one) and forks come apart. Plenty of videos.

I did it on my low rider and my road king. If I can do it, anyone can.

All of the above. Also, read through the service manual carefully to ensure you have the right tools. If you don't have the right torx and hex heads (and 12mm (at least on the FLDE) long hex head for the fork bolts) you will spend more time running around looking for tools than you will working on the bike. You NEED the service manual (imo) and you NEED torque wrenches. Don't guess on your front end.

I picked up this for the bottom bolt

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IYTFPDQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IYTFPDQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

You'll also need some metric sockets and allens for the caliper and pinch bolts. I don't recall the sizes though, sorry. .

I guess we could add a seal driver, and a fluid lever tool as well...

Got the same 12mm... they actually had it at the local Pep Boys. Took me a good minute to find one. Wish I had read ahead more thoroughly and not assumed I'd have all the tools.... haha

Thank y'all very much. I appreciate the comments. Defiantly not going to do it till I have a service manual in hand. I agree, never go cheap or guess on the front end.
