Default Pricing some work I want done. NEED ADVICE!

Hey guys,

I’m in the process of upgrading my handlebars (14” Cage Fighters, internally wired), as well as doing an S&S Cam chest upgrade & Bassani Exhaust. I’ve purchased all the parts, so this is strictly for labor. I’m deciding between 2 local shops to do the work.

First place I went to told me he could do the job in 4 days for $1500, leaving the tuning up to me & my FP3. This shop was very rough around the edges, guy is a real “biker”, lol. Very good reviews on Facebook & Yelp.

Second place gave me a quote of $2300 & 6 days turnaround. Difference is he has a Harley computer and stated that he could tune it & flash the ECU, doing a much better job on dialing it in than the FP3. Also great reviews, much more professional in his approach, lol. He said the tune was $400, so obviously his labor was a little more expensive.
Both shops do regular mechanical work as well as fab & custom builds. Neither one is charging for exhaust install, since the exhaust has to be removed to do the Cam chest anyway.

Opinions?

#1. He sounds like a no nonsense guy. #2 falshes the ECM, what happens when you add Performance Mods? Another $400 Flash!

You really need to get a breakdown of what they are charging for each component:

Cam Install
Dyno Tuning
Handlebar Install

What's each place charge per hour? Getting an all-in labor charge is not the way to go about this in my opinion for feedback.
  • $300-400 to Dyno Tune a bike is fairly common
  • Roughly 6-7hrs of labor for a cam install is very common (although personally in April I only paid for 3hrs labor at a Harley dealer for my cam install)
.... So that leaves the question how many hours are they stating for a handlebar install?

As far as the parts are concerned, mind sharing what you purchased? What model of Softail do you have? It's a real pain if you drop the bike off and find out you're missing a part when the bike is all apart and come to find out the part you need is on backorder (backorder parts are VERY likely right now)

#1 is definitely no nonsense, and honestly I don’t plan on anything else after this 🤥

A significant price difference to be sure, but a sketchy shop would give me pause. What recourse will you have with guy #1 or #2 if either screws it up?

That's a two maybe three day job. Both prices seem high to me but then again those are jobs I do myself. I would also look at PV tuner instead of the FP3. Fuel Moto has a map for your set up....

Sorry, 2018 Fatboy S. Adding LA Choppers 14” Stainless Steel Kage Fighter bars, S&S 475 Cam Chest Kit (includes oil pump, Cam plate & all bearings & gaskets, pushrods & tappets), Bassani Road Rage 3.
You know what, I’m not even sure what the hourly labor for each guy is, but obviously #2 is more expensive.
Shop #1 said the bars would be $450, Cam would be $1000.
Shop #2 said $800 for the bars(too high), $1100 for the Cam & $400 tune.
I know the prices are on the high side, but I live in the NYC Tri State area. Everything costs more here.
I guess the real question for me is whether or not the custom tune is worth $800 to me. Why not just have shop #1 do the work & then bring it to shop #2 for a $400 tune? Did I just answer my own question? 🤯

You just brought up a another point, you can bring the bike to be tuned anywhere after the cam install if you want. In some cases, certain tune shops do just that...and don't deal with installs, they just do tuning.

For your bars, just verify you purchased the right wire extensions, clutch cable and brake line. (I didnt see you mention that, so just putting that out there)

Nope, I got all the spaghetti & the bushings, lol. I dunno, part of me feels like if I autotune with the FP3, it should be fine. I can always revisit tuning later if I’m not satisfied with that, right?
