Default Transmission Noise

Even with ear plugs and a full face helmet I can hear a whine in 1st gear. Is that normal for the M8 transmissions?
Here are the details. 2019 Sport Glide. Bought it used from a dealer 125 miles from home with 337 miles. I took it back to them for the 1000 mile service as it was included in the deal. At around 4000 miles I checked the trans oil and had to add 9 ozs. to bring it up to the full mark.
I took it to my local dealer and told them that I thought I had the fluid transfer problem and the said NO.!
Could 3000 miles with the oil level 9 Oz low cause the gear noise or is the whine in 1st normal?

Jim, even though the transfer problem seems limited to the twin cooled bikes the only way they could positively rule out trans to primary transfer is to pull the derby cover and check the level in the primary. Assuming the trans level was correct at some point that 9oz had to have gone somewhere.

Given the gear whine in 1st I'd be a little concerned.

They did pull the cover and said that the level was correct. That leads me to believe that the dealer that did the 1K service did not fill it completely.

After it was topped off, did the whine go away?

Did you have anybody ride your bike to confirm this issue?
These bikes can make different noises in different gears, your bike might be normal for an M8.

Have not had anyone ride it. I don't know anyone with an M8 softail to compare to.

Transfer issue is not limited to twin cooled bikes.

If you listen for a whine in first gear, you will hear it, even with earplugs and full face helmet.

Running 9 ounces low won`t hurt a thing.

Until you establish a baseline for your transmission and primary lube levels, it is a waste of time to speculate about transfer.

Set the lubes to the proper levels and check after about 500-1,000 miles and then you will have a better idea of what may be happening.

Thanks for the input. That's good to hear.

The book says the capacity of the transmission is 24 ounces. I've found that 24 ounces won't even show on the dipstick. It takes a full 32 ounces to bring the level to the midpoint of the dipstick.

It's likely that the service tech measured 24 ounces and poured it in without checking the level.
