Default Lowering 2019 softail

Hello and this being my first post looking for advice. I am Richard from sunny Berkshire in the UK.

I have my bike for 3 weeks and have already had stage 1, shirt shots, changed the bars the low ride s, replaced indicators with some mini LED, black levers, forward controls, solo saddleman seat and black upper fork covers.

All in I am pretty chuffed with it coming from sport and naked bikes.

I will now use the bike and stop looking and polishing it but have plans next year to replace the rear fender for a shorter one by Thunderbike in Germany.

For the look I am after it talks about lowering the suspension by 30mm.

The advise I am after will this ruin the handling of the bike?

Many thanks

Rich

Hi Rich,

I am in Dorset not a million miles away. I have a 2017 Softail and also had the same conundrum as yourself. With a Thunderbike fender unless you do something with the rear suspension you will still have enough room for a couple of badgers, three foxes and six chickens to be able to take up residence underneath.
Lowering the bike on our roads will reduce handling and you run the risk of the rear wheel impinging on the fender if you hit a pothole, railway crossing or a ramp at a higher speed. I decided to bite the bullet and fit an air ride system at the same time as the fender. You can then raise/lower and adjust the rebound and damping at the flick of a switch. I fitted a Shotgun Shock. Whilst Thunderbike does their own air ride system the overriding factor for me was the feedback and recommendations of the Shotgun Shock and the fact none of the competition offer a lifetime warranty on the system.

I have the SAS air ride on my 2016 Breakout but the new M8 platform uses a different shock, I'm now in the process of lowering a 2019 FXBB with the pPlatinum Air Suspension kit.

This is the platinum for the FXBB and will fit all the M8 softails

As you live in the UK one of the cheapest adjustable shocks for the M8 Softail is from the Nitron range UK precision made.

There are others too such as YSS etc.

That TB fender calls for air believe, you can get some comfort wen needed and go low for the show , those UK shocks would be good I believe that but the bike always lowered is not practical. I have a lowering on my FXBB now
and with fast corners the exhaust is scraping the asfalt, with air you just pump it um and you'r good to go. That is why I change my lowerd shock for air on the FXBB now.

Hey K9F, I grew up in Dorset, love it down there and Poole harbour.

Thanks for the replies guys. With lockdown, I have some time for research now, just a shame the crappy weather in now here.

It sounds like it needs to be air with UK roads and to avoid scrapping parts of the bike. DId have a heart attack at that price.

I dont want to go mad low. If I may ask, this is the rear fender I want on my bike
do you think this has been lowered. I do not mind this kind of gap.

Thanks again guys

The crappy weather means spanner time to get the bike as you wish. I did all my modifications at home. That has not been lowered by the looks of things and a view from the back as thought reveals an under fender aperture as large as the entrance to the Channel Tunnel. Same as MoneyFor I went for the fender with the running/stop and indicator lights built in. In fact he helped me with photos of his own seat so I could get mine custom made over here! Thanks again MoneyFor!

I love Dorset too. I grew up here and couldn't wait to get away. Having spent 32 years in the military and 7 in the Merchant Navy travelling and seeing the World I now wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

This is my FXBB now, it is lowered at the max for the big radius ( not on the picture ) exhaust, it is scraping already now. For that reason I bought air so I can get low
wen possible and higher for comfort riding.

This is today,

I already put here on the operating table last night, today I am starting the installation of the air suspension.....
