Default Max size on Rear tire replacement

OK Brothers,

I have searched and searched. One guy in a thread asks if he could put a 160/80/16 and some dude immediately says I wouldn't do it. Obviously he is a mechanic. So for all the money. This question is not up to diagnosis or opinion but facts. Don't care to hear how hard it is to barely fit.

If I get a 160 on the rim will it fit in the rear? I'm only asking from anybody who has a 160 on the rear with stock spoke rims

Yes or No

I would be so grateful to hear back on this.

Willie J.

The Heritage runs a 150 - 80 rear as standard doesn't it? If so you're talking adding an extra 5 mm of width on each side of the tyre. Plenty of room then.

When TwinCam baggers came with 140 rear tires, I ran 150 tires, put almost 100,000 miles on that bike doing it.

Thumbs up It works with 160 for FLHC/S in the rear

Me, I've been running an AVON Cobra Chrome in 160/80B16 81H in the rear of my Heritage FLHCS for over 10,000Km and it works well. Enough room, even if the AVON looks more than a 170 and for the next replacement I will do it again!

With the rear, width wise, no problem with 3.5", depending on what width of tyre you are considering putting on it.

Increasing to an 18" diameter rim from a 16" one, you're effectively adding 1 inch greater diameter to each 'side' to your OEM rim and tyre. Add 1 inch to the apex of the OEM rim and tyre and check clearance all the way round. Bear in mind the height of the OEM tyre you used in your measurement when buying a replacement.

Use the same method for checking clearance with a 21" rim where you will be effectively adding 2.5" to each "side" of your current rim and tyre and 1/4" increase width wise left and right.

I have a 2018 HC that I swapped the wire spoked rims for the 2022 style cast aluminum rims. I have been running the Dunlop Elite 4 with a 160/80-16 for 16,000Kms without issue, but will probably go back to the standard 150 tire as its cheaper.
