Default Platinum bleed feed issues

I have a 2006 Night Train that I'm trying to install the Platinum bleed feed air ride system onto. I've run into a couple of snags as my bike is not California emissions and does not have the bracket on the back. After a call to my local H-D dealership they told me that I need 3/8-18 X 3" bolts to mount the bracket. I'm glad I checked before leaving the hardware store, but the bracket only fits 5/16-18 bolts. Here is the deal, the holes in the rear of the transmission housing are not tapped and the 5/16 bolt slides right in, so I'm thinking that even if I tap the hole there is not enough to hold my pump. Anyone have any suggestions.

No I'm not welding more metal into the holes so I can tap them to any size!!!!

Thanks in advance,
Will

yeah you'll have to drill out the bracket and drill and tap the holes in the transmission. if the holes in the tranny are just barely over the size of the bolt then tap it or 3/8-16. if the hole is already much bigger than the 5/16" bolt then drill and tap it for 7/16"

that really sucks tho cause my tranny was already tapped 1/4-20 and the bolt holes in the bracket were just over that, like they should be.

if you need any more info PM me, I'm a machinist. I do lots of drilling/tapping.

Hey Will, if you don't mind, could you post some pictures of the project?
I'm about to do the same thing.

Ok, here are my findings! I drilled the bracket which just knocks off the threaded spaces that are welded to it. I ended up finding some 3/8-16 grade 8 bolts and just for grins put them in the transmission holes. Just to find that the holes are already tapped, but they are tapped to that special order H-D 3/8-18 bolt!

Not sure what to do now? I guess I have to drill the bike and retap to a larger size then? I hope not... I'm mechanically inclined, but have never worked with tap and dies before!!

It is pretty easy. I just did mine the drill will stop at the bottom of the existing hole.
When u tap the hole use plenty of oil to lubricate, also reverse the tap every 2 or 3 turns to clear out the cuttings. Stop when tap hits bottom of hole.
For assuranse you can mark the depth of the hole with tape on your drill bit and tap to see when you have reached the bottom of hole. The trans case is aluminum and will drill and tap easily. Suggestion, practise on some scrap metal before you do your case.

May sound silly but those HD bolts cant be that much cash. I would just order a set of the HD ones so you dont stand the chance of screwwing up the holes when you retap them.

I called my local H-D dealer and they have put 2 of those 3/8"-18x3" P/N 4195 (for future reference). I will wait for them to come in and will continue my project. Good thing I have a street glide to ride in the mean time!!

Thanks for all the help everyone, I will take some pics and post them once I get it all together!

Now I have all the info I need as my dealer said there is no part number for the bolts. Douche bags! that really pisses me off. Sorry to anyone that has had an issue with this but it is a learning experience for us all as i have a CA bike so I did not need to get the bolts or the bracket.
