I've been fooling around with the stereo on my bike since I got it. I've had 4 Polk MM651 speakers installed for quite some time now and have been running them with two old Kicker 40SS amps that I had laying around. Just recently I swapped out the two Kickers for a Soundstream 4.520D mounted in the fairing, spaced up 1/4" above the radio. It sounds great. Its loud and clear, everything I was expecting based on the reviews I've read here.
One problem. I went on a 600 mile three day trip last week and my tunes cut out on me twice. They kicked back in after 10 minutes or so which leads me to believe that the amp is overheating and shutting down.
Anyone else have this experience with the Soundstream setup? Any help would be appreciated.
Has problem repeated itself yet? I done an install this spring that later gave me trouble. Done just what you are explaining. I too thought it was amp and replaced it. Redone all connections but problem came back few days later. Eventually got worse and kept cycling on/off. Ended up being a blown speaker. A bad speaker going to ground will clip the amp making you think the amp is culprit. If problem becomes more frequent try unplugging one speaker and ride for awhile then hook up and try the other. Chances are probably more likely you have a speaker failing
Anything is possible with electronics but FWIW that amp is solid as a rock! I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the soundstream 520.D to anyone. Great amp! As Pioneer stated I'd take a look at the other components namely the radio and or the speakers.
So the stereo was still lit up but no sound or did everything shut down? It's not clear in your post. My SS crapped out after less than 6 months of use as the front and rear outputs were crossing over each other internally somehow.
Stereo was still lit up but all music stopped. I could change songs on the cd and adjust volume but it didn't make a difference. The one time it kicked back on was after shutdown for fuel, the other may have been after I shut the radio off and turned it back on, I can't remember for sure.
Before I installed the soundstream, one of my kicker amps had the protect light on and that set of speakers would not work. When the soundstream worked fine I assumed that the light was due to wiring under the tank which has now been eliminated. If this is the problem I wonder why it is intermittent with the ss but was a total shutdown for the kicker???
Update
Took a 100+ mile ride yesterday. The amp kicked out multiple times randomly during the ride. Each time it kicked out I would power down the radio then turn it back on and the tunes would resume.
Am I to assume that this is a radio problem? Any help would be appreciated.
