Default Sony Powered HU

Sony MEX-XB100BT Power Output:
Peak: 100 watts x 4 channels
RMS: 40 watts x 4 channels

Is this enough for a lot of installs?

If you want loud and clear you will need an amp.

+1 you will need an amp and some decent speakers, to go with that HU.

applies for every HU out there... they do NOT provide 100W, period.
you always want to install an amp and speakers when putting aftermarket HU in. otherwise you'll be looking at similar loudness/volume as Stock HU
