What do you mean "lose the space"? The spacer move the speakers out. I don't think I've ever heard anyone say anything about space.
6.5's are going to give you the best speaker for sound and will offer way more options than the 5.25's.

Hands down the Polk MM651's sound the best back there for a drop in. Just need to mount the crossovers under the black leather flap on the tour pak.
