I picked up some DD AW6.5 & AT28s (thanks Alex) and ran them for a month or so with a CV b2. All seemed well with that setup.
Since Sturgis I picked up a JL Audio MX500/4 (Bridged) the DD speakers and a new BT355 along with my 6.5 HD radio.
I set the amp up using a DMM at 28V (engine running) 3/4 volume.
Here is the issue. When I am out riding if I go to 3 bars from full volume the music cuts out completely. Sounds great up to that point and bamm shuts off. Turn it back down and it's back and still sounds good. Everything is basically brand new. Where should I start my trouble shooting? I have checked wiring all seems good. Is the amp being over powered? Thanks for any input!
That's what I am afraid of. Volume wise when it cuts out it isn't even as loud as my B2 and Kappa speakers were. I'm going to pull the fairing off and monitor the lights on the amp. See if I can duplicate it in the garage.
Good morning. Forgive me if I am posting out of line with the rules of the forum. I have just signed up last night and mainly because of the same exact issue and was looking for some input as well. I do see one thing we have in common with our installs, and that is the BT355 line leveler. I have a 2014 Street Glide Special with factory head unit and no flash.
I just installed (9-4-17) a new MMATS MD4100 amp with Hertz Milli Pro MPX 165.3 speakers in the fairing and a Biketronics BT355 line leveler. No other speakers are installed on the bike. While trying to tune the amp I am running into the exact same issue where the sound cuts out at three bars from full; however, it depends on the type of song. If I am listening to something with minimal bass, like George Strait, it doesn't appear to do it. If I play something like "Yeah!" with substantial bass it has been doing it. I too have checked every single connection and have found nothing lose.
While troubleshooting it again this morning and going over the entire installation the only thing I found that might be in question is when I zip tied all my wiring and cleaned it up I had allowed the left speaker wire input from head unit to the BT355 Line Leveler (e.g. molex connector wires) to run up next to the 8ga amp power wiring. Everything is insulated of course but I know those wires shouldn't be run that close together. Other than that I have found nothing in question and am at a loss.

Starbiker - Your gains should be at 34.6 with the DMM. That amp produces 250 watts bridged @ 4 ohms. Use Slye's chart as a reference. Turn the bike off and use a battery charger so you can hear the dam thing. Make sure you use a 1000HZ test tone and all your radio settings are flat @ 3/4 volume.
TY - You need to do the same thing and get back to us. The BT line leveler should be left on the default settings.

P.S. Starbiker - Do you have the TXO crossovers?
I assume you mean the crossovers that came with the AW6.5 & AT28 speakers from Alex. Yes I have those.
Alex also told me that the tweeters would blow if I went that high and said that 28 volts was a better place to start.
I like the battery charger idea! I won't kill myself with a closed garage door!

I am using a brand new BT355. The one I had prior l&r was reversed and the left side stopped working.

I am using a brand new one as well. I spoke with Mike at Biketronics' tech support. Nice guy! He isn't ruling anything out but would be very surprised if the issue we are experiencing is with the line leveler.

Gannicus - Thank you. I am having to contact the MMATS manufacture in order to figure out what the actual power output of the MD4100 is for 2 channel, not bridged, so I can determine the desired voltage RMS for my set up. Unfortunately, he is most likely in evacuation mode right now since his shop is in Juniper, Florida.
